Testing REI's current sale prices to their reported upcoming sale prices.

ENO Double Nest Hammock currently 64.95, should have 30% off of that price. - NOT CORRECT (not showing any discount)
REI Camp Couch on sale now at 61.93 should be 30% off of that - CORRECT
Suunto Core currently 299.00, should be 25% off that - CORRECT
Big Agnes Q Core Pad Regular currently 139.95 should be 25% off that - CORRECT
Polar FT7 currently 109.95 should be 25% off that - CORRECT
Reef Surf and Saddle Flip Flop on sale for 28.93, should be 30-50% off of that - CORRECT
REI midweight Polartec Power Dry Crew on sale for 18.93 should be 25% off of that - NOT CORRECT

The bikes are generally one of the best deals during their sales (or shoes). If you are really interested and have an REI near by, check out those bike brands now and have a talk with the mechanics to see if you can set it aside, and if it does go on sale, pick it up then!

Check their prices now and then when the sale starts. REI tends to mark up items, then mark down on the sale date. In other words, if something is $10 on sale now, don't expect 20-30% off that price. It will bump up to the original price, then discount. Not a horrible thing, but somethintg I have noticed many times.

Agree. they tend to do that. Sometimes, you actually end up buying it in regular days than a sale day. or may be it will be a regular priced item in amazon when REI says its a sale.

However some of the items are only available in REI as they are a speciality shop.

Just ain't what is used to be....I really miss the super sales, at this time in years past. REI's "sales" have sucked so bad the past couple of years, I have went from an REI loyalist, to trickin' myself out other online retailers quite often

This is completely false. Might happen at best buy, but not rei.

25% off a Suunto Core should be pretty sweet.

No, he's right. All of those %-off as listed in the OP will be off the retail price, save the rare mistake and extra clearance here and there. (Two summers ago CatEye was discounted off the sale price for the first couple days of the sale, and then adjusted back to the proper %-off-retail.)

no it's happened to me on multiple occasions. there's still some discount, but it only comes out to be like 5-10% cheaper than normal.

e.g. if it's regularly $10, during the sale it will be like $9. not the $7 you'd expect from a "20-30% off" sale.

best buy is worse, though. if it's regularly $10, it might come out to be like $10.50 during a "sale"!

Thanks for the heads up. Planning on doing some camping now that I've graduated from university and have a job and money for the first time ever.

EDIT: Any seasoned and experienced campers here? I've been looking for backpacks and Woot is offering this Kelty pack today for $39.99: http://sport.woot.com/

Should I pull the trigger on that now or hold off until the REI clearance sale? Seems like even after 25% off the REI packs are still going to be pretty pricey, but I don't know anything about the quality difference.

For backpacks, you really need to find one that fits your body.. And one for the purpose you intend to use it. Lots of difference between a cheap backpack and a reliable backpack. Zippers break at bad times. Water gets in where it shouldn't. Pockets made for ease of reaching when you're on the trail. REI people don't sell cheap crap, but they do sell quality stuff for the occasional user, the beginner, or the experienced hiking-mavin. Info on the net is helpful, but for a backpack, here's nothing like being fitted by someone who knows their hiking stuff.
Other stuff you can come by cheap, like at Walmart, or second hand. Like on Craigslist. But a good-fitting backpack can make a lot of difference in muscles at the end of the day.

If by completley false you mean it happens at REI, then you are correct.

We should test this out. I'll post up a couple of items that are to be on sale, with their current prices, in the wiki.
