Well it's $5 for a check up, not a cat scan. I doubt technology has really afforded us many advances in the field of checking to make sure someone is ok. |

I was talking about technology as in even having a computer! An 87 yr old could possibly misdiagnose someone or "forget" to point out a red flag in someone's health. And I don't know what you're talking about but your statement is wrong! Cat scans, MRI's, Ultra sounds and other various hospital equipment detect diseases, cancers and disorders. Just going to get a "check-up" doesn't really qualify you for being "healthy" there could be deadly dormant diseases in your body that would normally go undetected if not checked into thoroughly! I bet you the 5 dollar's doesn't get you a free trip to the hospital to have them run some very expensive tests! I can't believe I just typed all that.

I'm not sure if this should be a slick deal or not, as I imagine this doctor has a limited amount of patients and is probably located in a small town, but it's definitely a feel good story for everyone.

Obviously if you're looking for inexpensive medical advice and or treatment, you'll stumble upon this physician. I agree that I would at most go for a common cold, strep throat or to get a referral for labwork etc. I worked for a pediatrician and a dermatologist for a while when I was in NJ. The dermatologist who was in her practice for over 60 yrs, has no problems charging what she does, she has up to date equipment, has sharp eyes, biopsies go out and come back almost all the time exactly as she diagnoses them. I disagree with the comments that just because you're old you are not proficient. The pediatrician I worked for was a lot younger, but to bring in paying clients, would often accept clients with no insurance for $35 just for a checkup or state funded shots admin fee.
That being written, both practices had problems with patients coming for one visit and then not paying their deductible, or they would "forget" their copay and it was a huge frustration to try to get them to pay, thus doctor could be saving himself a huge headache by offering the people who find him at this price, the chance to pay $5 vs nothing at all, and skipping out. Also, to the person who posted about MRI, xray and Ultrasounds only being available at hospitals, and/or implying that one who gets it done elsewhere is not getting it done/read properly, I'm not sure if you're aware that many out patient centers offer these services and some constantly only do these tasks outside of a hospital setting, are less expensive and the technicians are quite proficient, at least from my experience. This wouldn't be considered a deal in many first world countries or even many developing countries. Maybe the US will be a first world country one day.

Your numbers are way off. This guy is a primary care doctor. I can assure you the average salary is much less than $300,000. You also neglect malpractice fees and student loan debt that amounts to approx. $1 million after interest by the time it is paid off. Are there greedy doctors? Yes. But find a profession in which this is not the case. At some point you must think that years of extra professional training and longer hours warrants some sort of salary increase from other positions that do not require such a huge sacrifice. Remember that while many people are out living out their prime years of their life, those studying and training to become physicians are working their asses off until age 30 or more. And at that point, I can assure you, a primary care physician is not making $300,000. |
