Not sure why this isn't getting any love. The same tent is >$30 more on REI outlet at a sale price. Not sure if I should get this one or get a freestanding one.

Because most of us camp at camp grounds and would rather get a slightly heavier tent but one that could fit 2x queen beds in it (even for just 2 people) for the same price

what is the point of a 1.5 person tent? So it can fit you and a your midget sherpa?
and what does: "2,000mm waterproof-rated coating on fly" mean? The coating is 2 meters thick? That's quite the coating. |

Don't need one, I have an REI one for Backpacking. Had for several years and is still holding up well. I don't like the $99 minimum purchase. Not a bad deal, I prefer a little bigger tent.

The mm measurement is literally the amount of rain a fabric can withstand in a 24 hour period. Therefore a rating of 10,000mm means that a fabric can withstand 10,000mm of rain in a 24 hour period. As far as this particular tent goes, it's (relatively) heavy for only having 2 non-freestanding poles and low waterproof rating (see evo link). In fact, only the floor is 2k, the walls are 1.5k. But know that Alps is the budge conscious brand for tents. At this price point you might as well go even cheaper and get a walmart tent, you won't be losing much quality. This is my solo tent btw, Big Agnes Fly Creek UL1 [rei.com]. Obviously I'm not trying to compare the two, but to give you an idea of what a real ultralight, freestanding tent is. Happy trails! Chiming in with thisonelies; while compared to the regular price this is a deal, this tent is not the best option for most people. No thumbs down, but no up either for me.
Since we're chiming in with alternatives, you can frequently find the Kelty Gunnison 2.1 for ~$125 or less (current best price I can find is $149.95 directly from Kelty or ~$153 from Amazon). It's about 10 ounces more than the Mystique, 12 square feet more sleeping area, and 2 doors & vestibules. It can comfortably sleep 2 and the weight is decent for a budget backpacker. We managed 2 people, plus a medium sized dog and gear (mostly in the vestibules, though essentials inside). It was a little tight with the dog added in (until she decided to stay at our feet; the tent is pretty long), but I still slept fine. And it rained for about 10 hours straight our first evening out in it; not a drop of water inside that we didn't track in on ourselves... the walls were bone dry. It was definitely a good buy for me. |

The mm measurement has nothing to do with how much rain falls in a 24 hour period. It is a measure of how much pressure the water needs to be under to penetrate the fabric or seams. Said differently, if you had a column of water over 2,000mm high and placed it on top of this rain fly the water would seep through. Under 2,000mm and it shouldn't. Sometimes the numbers may seem high, and for a rain fly 2000mm is probably sufficient, but when you start talking about the floor of the tent, you'll want a much higher number since it'll have the weight of your body (or just feet, whatever) pushing it into wet ground. d- |

Anyway, I'm not sure where in my post I was "making fun" of the tent. I suppose you misinterpreted my words as being elitist in that I seemed to "look down" on an inexpensive tent or when I suggested you might as well get a walmart tent. Try not to be too offended, but I was being sincere in suggesting a cheaper walmart tent would not be too different in terms of quality. So maybe the true definition of mm in waterproof ratings is moot. After all, how do we compare a column of rain pressure to being outside in the rain? Instead, I'll provide a real-world tangible (albeit, anecdotal) measurement: I've bought many snowboarding and backpacking shells in my time and I can tell you that a 2k mm rating will only last a few hours in wet or snowy conditions before a layer of water is formed on the inner side of the material. Now my collection only consists of 15k or higher. |
