that price is pretty freakin slick, especially considering that it is arguably the fastest (so long as it isn't more than half full...? or did they get that improved? i think they improved it..) SSD currently ont he market, albeit not the most stable in reputation. OCZ's reputation that is.

Great price. Specs can be deceiving. This handles works well with all data types unlike the Sandforce based drives that only reaches max performance with compressible data.

Hrmm I have a $10 credit from newegg which would bring this down to $.50/gig. Not sure whether I should take the risk with it though. Would the 830 be a better choice? I don't want to have to deal with RMA if the drive doesn't work.

I hate rebates, so I'm passing. Ugh, really wanted 1 more SSD but the tsunami of SSD deals seems to have died down a bit.

Not trying to TC, but it seems like EVERY day there is a FP deal on SSDs. If there's an "amazing" SSD deal everyday....at some point don't the deals cease to be amazing?

While it does seem like the trend will continue, you can't absolutely count on it. There are cycles in manufacturing, and this may be a period in which manufacturers thought there would be greater demand than there is, so they have lots of inventory. And that's not to mention unforeseen circumstances. 1.5-2yrs years ago, 2TB 5400rpm drives were front page at $70 every other day. Then the tsunami hit, and the shortage, as well as the anticipation for the shortage, drove hard drive prices back up. For years, the average capacity of a $70 drive was doubling every year or two. Now, we're a few years away from 4TB drives reaching $70. Anyway, you're probably right, but if you really need an SSD for a build, just pick a great deal and commit. It may be $10 cheaper in a month or two, but it may also be $10 more. For all we know, these may be the best prices we see until Black Friday.

Not sure how it remains the riskiest choice? I have had 4 OCZ drives in total, 2 agility and 2 vertex, and I have had no issues with them whatsoever. I did not have to do anything crazy even when I was using vista, I just had to tune vista/mobo to use the drive properly and that fixed all my problems. Now that I upgraded to 7 with my build last year I didn't even have to tune anything, win 7 recognized the ssd and made the proper adjustments. I started with a 60gig agility (been using it about 2 years), got 2 60gig vertex plus ocz (used them for about a year in a raid) , and now about 7 months ago got a 240 to replace the 2 vertex plus cause I needed more space. Not a single problem with any of them. I had one speed issue once, but that is cause my mobo was not setup properly to handle a SSD, wasn't the drives fault, once I changed my settings and reloaded my OS issue solved. Overall OCZ makes very quality drives I would pick them over every brand besides Intel, I would just never spend the money on a Intel. Best bang for your buck is the OCZ's always have been, and I am pretty sure they always will be. Waiting for my 240 to be close to full so I can buy another 240 to raid them together for my steam drive. |
