What happened to originality in the video game industry?

Yes, I do. Though as far as originality is concerned, I agree that most games are developed and produced with similarities but I won't say they lack originality. Most of the newer games are better versions (like you said) but I (at least for me) don't classify them as copycats.

I'd say in terms of multiplayer...a lot of games have lost their originality.

The large video corporations make their earnings off proven IP's and lose money when creating new ones (lower sales on a new title plus r&d costs), so yes, we are seeing annual releases and re-hashed titles because it is what people are buying.

While I like to think it's a shame and we shouldn't be buying these titles in order to renew ingenuity within the industry, call me guilty because I currently own Dead Space 2, Bioshock 2, Mass Effect 3, Madden 12, NCAA 11, Far Cry 2, etc..

I don't know if anyone has brought this up yet, but this ^ is probably the reason. This tends to happen as consoles mature in their lifecycles. Games and series also 'mature' in a market sense. Companies take less risk, etc.

Very true, I have read an article on Joystiq however that states EA is working on 12 new IPS for next generation.
