A big part of the benefit of using these machines is that you don't have to count the coins first. A quick google search shows a few people claiming they were shorted by dollars worth, but most results show they're within a penny or nickel either way of the correct amount.

I've got a pile of coins but had never used the Coinstar machines because I didn't want to pay their fee. Great to know that gift cards are "free".

However, I thought my local Publix grocery stores had them, but a search on Coinstar.com only comes up with Winn Dixie and Wal-mart locations near me (where I never go). I'll have to look at Publix and see what brand their machines are.

But.. I've been using credit cards for far more purchases lately, so I don't get many coins at all any more.

I understand, I guess I am one of those people who has had the machine be off by more than $1 a couple different times. For people just turning in their spare change, its probably not a problem, and I'm sure 99% of the time it will come out very close to what you put in. I was just saying, if you are planning to do multiple transactions, might as well buy $20 in quarters first, so you know the amount, pour them in, and if its off by a significant amount, maybe try a different machine.

Do these bonus MP3 credits have an expiry date?

Thanks Op, and others that explained that Gift Cards don't get charged a fee. Just came back, uploaded my codes to Amazon. Everything worked.

Gonna go scrounge around for more change.

I doubt putting in 80 quarters will accurately test how well it will count a mixed bag of coins. Also, asking the cashier for $20 in quarters just so you can run this test is kind of rude, to me.

I just turned my coins in at a coinstar for an amazon gift card yesterday (8/26) and got $21. I am mad that I missed out. Good post OP

Regarding accurately counting change, I have one of those coin banks from Target after Christmas sale ($2.50). I'd say the Coinstar machine that I went to today was fairly accurate.

Next run, I'll do an exact count comparison and see how they match up.
