Which portable gaming system to get..?

Ok, so I want to get a PSP or Nintendo DS or whatever it is called. I think those are the correct 2...

Anyhow, i've done a little research, and both seem to have a strong library of games, but my favorite types, especially for portable systems, is Strategy RPG's, or just RPG's.
For isntance, Final Fantasy Tactics, Ogre Battle, those games excite me. I also want Valkyrie Chronicles. I'm not sure which systems these games are all on without looking, but I THINK i would like Fire Emblem as well, i do like Shining Force 2, etc.

So with that in mind...which portable system would be best? Or if not best, which systems have how many games that are awesome RPG or RPG like games?

Also, each of these systems seem to have like 3-4 different types of the same system!? Theres a PSP 1000. a psp 1001, 2000, 3000, pspGo, PS Vita (which i think is a new system in no way tied to the psp?) What the crap? So confusing to me.
Then there the DS, the 3D DS, the 3D XL DS, etc etc.
Obviously i haven't done a ton of research, so some guidance would be So awesome!

fire emblem is pure nintendo, and the new one is 3ds only
Valkyrie Chronicles is only ps3 (no psp or mobile)

I would suggest you skip the older generations, and look at this [wikipedia.org] and this [wikipedia.org], and then just decide which one has more games that you like - also see if you can try each at a best buy store or something like that prior to purchase to make sure it fits your hands/etc. first

Why get the Vita or 3DS isntead? does it allow you to play the PSP/DS games?

yes - you can play the older generation games on the newer devices, but not the other way around (although you can't play GBA games on the 3ds like you could on the older DS's)

I thought i recall hearing that Vita doesn't have an external game slot and that it is supposed to be only online and downloads? Or is there a specific model that was made that way?

I dont know what your personal situation is, but for 99% of adults it is better to get a real console like ps3 or xbox360.

If you are 10 years old, or if you dont have a tv, or if you dont have a car and you take the bus everywhere, then maybe getting a portable system is right for you.

Otherwise, a console offers better graphics and a larger screen and a bigger library and a better controller and can act as an entertainment hub (blu ray, dvd, cds, to go along with netflix which you can also get on handhelds).

lol, well, to be sure, you are correct. a 'real' console is better for the things you are referring to, hence why i have my 360, and my gaming PC (which needs an udpated GPU, since Skyrim still won't run above 30 fps steadily unfortunately....will probably upgrade to a 7870, or 7950 from my XFX 5750 once price drops some more...)
I am looking at/into a portable system because i am about to engage in some extended travel time one some trips int he cmoing months, and it is rather difficult to play a 360 in a minivan, and trasporting it around is NOT convenient. I would just get an awesome laptop, but those can be pretty freakin expensive for a good one that wont' need an upgrade for at least a year or 3. So, portable gaming console fits the bill pretty well Stick Out Tongue

The Vita seems to not be a good choice/option since it require PS3 for a bit of its functionality (and i don't have one), so PSP seems the best bet thus far. With that in mind, does anyone have any idea which of the models would be the best...? I've done a little more research on them, but i've read some confusing stuff posted mostly in forums talkinga bout them, adn i'm fairly confident some of the people didn't have a clue what they are/were talking about Big Grin

vita has BC with Digital PSP games and some PS1 games
You cannot transfer/convert UMD PSP games to the Vita.

if you want RPGs, you'll want to go Sony's system route because really the only main RPGs on Nintendo's systems are Pokemon.

From your list, you're interested in the old PSP titles
If you're a Pirate

, you'll be happy with the PSPgo.
Small enough for travel use, built in 16gb storage space, can install ProCFW on it.
You can play PSP games, PS1 Classics, PS Mini games on it.

16gb PSPgo are for sale at gamestop for $80.00 i believe, ebay has it around the same price

much, and want to take advantage of cheap UMD prices for PSP games, get a PSP2000. Gamestop has them for $70, ebay is around $50.
You can install CFW on these as well, and play UMD games, but remember you'll also have to factor in the cost for a Memory Stick Pro Duo as these systems default do not have memory/storage space.

If you're going to be 100% legit, have PS3 and have invested in the PSN infrastructure, the Vita is obviously the choice to go, with a robust PSP B/C library (not every game works, like Valkyria Chronicles II isn't officially supported, but you can transfer from your PS3 to the Vita)

But as you don't have a PS3 and don't seem to want to invest in one (lol 360), you'll prob be best on the 360.

Only get a 3DS/3DS XL if you're interested in mario factory games (mario, pokemon, metroid, zelda, etc). I myself have a 3DSXL now, but i only own 3 games for it: Zelda Ocarina of Time, Final Fantasy Theaterhythm, and Kingdom Hearts 3D.
I really only got it for Theaterhythm and Kingdom Hearts, mainly cause im a FF/KH fan, and i'll prob be playing pokemon too.

these days, im pretty invested in my Vita and PSN digital titles. I got actually a few PSP games i bought on PSN (Persona 2,3, Hot Shots Tennis, Hexyz Force, Legend of Heros Trails of Sky, Megaman Maverick Hunter X, Disgaea 1,2, Final Fantasy 4 complete, and others) that all run great and look great on the Vita.
I have all the old school PS1 RPGs for the PS1 Classics (FF5-9, Vagrant Story, Wild Arms, Chrono Trigger/Cross, and a few other RPGs). But again i have 2 PS3s so im pretty invested in Sony (ironically i do not have PSN+ as i hate to pay for online play that I don't do)

There are a lot of great JRPG and turn based strategy game on the system that are very deep as well. Also a lot of fun mini games.

Go with the Vita.

I traveled a lot this year and the Vita been great. It has been with me on 6 different trips.

Upside:

Built.

The built quality is great. The Vita is pretty even when it's off, even the USB cable, which is rubber coated (?) is awesome. It's one of my favorite looking portable devices. The ergonomics is also spot-on if you have bigger hands. You can tell Sony designed the Vita to be played with for long stretches of time. No hand cramps like when you are using the 3DS and iPhone. The Vita's screen is vibrant, the menus are intuitive, and the new rear touch control is a really nice addition for navigating the web.

This Vita is tough also. I did accidentally drop the Vita a couple of times, over 5 feet, there wasn't even the slightest scratch on it.

Plentiful JRPG games.

The Vita doesn't have too many RPG games currently but it does have some of the best RPGs available from the PSP and more recently the PS1.

-Disgaea Infinite, 2, Afternoon of Darkness (PSP)
-Disgaea 3 (Vita)
-Corpse Party (PSP)
-FF7 (PS1)
-Legend of Heroes:Trails (PSP)
-Persona 1,2,3 (PSP)
-Persona 4 (Vita)

Just to name a few. A lot of JRPG from Atlus, NIS, and Xseed.

Region Free

If you do travel abroad, the Vita is also region free. This was my main reason to switch from the 3DS. I remember being in London in Febuary and not being able to play Resident Evil because it was region specific. (Great game BTW)

Downsides:

The battery life.

I am a huge Uncharted fan and I purchased Gold Abyss for the Vita. The most I can squeeze out of the Vita while playing this was a meager 4 hours continuous, max. Playing PSP games up it to about 6 hours.

Charging.

That awesome rubber coated USB cable? It connects to an AC adaptor and 6 foot plug. The whole thing put together is about 10 feet long. For something that is portable and needs charging as much as the Vita, I think that should have come with a shorter AC plug to carry around.

Expensive Accessories

The memory cards are really expensive. Heck, everything for the Vita is.

Overall. The Vita is a great portable device. I see that you are a little swayed that you will need a PS3 to use the Vita. The Vita actually just enhances the PS3 and not the other way around. You can remote play the PS3 with the Vita, some cross play games, but that's mainly it.

Other then travel, I actually use the Vita a lot when my wife uses the TV for her Korean drama fix on Netflix too.

Surprise no one jumped aboard to say that the iPad/iPhone is superior for portable gaming. Yet?
