Sleeping Dogs: Anybody playing it?

I rented it at Redbox and played it for a couple of hours.

The storyline and cinematics are cool. Cinematic graphics are very good, game graphics kind of bland, but the hong kong backdrop is cool and there is a lot of attention to detail.

The missions for the first 2 hours were very linear and boring, not sure if the game opens up later?

The combat was fun, hand to hand combat very similar to Batman Arkham Asylum. I was disappointed that there was no gunplay, in the first 2 hours at least.

Driving was pretty basic, in reviews I've seen it described as "arcadey", and I would agree. Not much substance to driving in the game.

I was pretty disappointed and returned the game without looking back... I will be tempted to pick it up and play it when it reaches $10-$20 range...

Saints Row The Third is the best game of this type so play that if you haven't already

no problem, if you can grab it for $2 at a Redbox (or cheaper with promo code) definitely check it out, it's not a bad game at all

i've had a poor run with games lately, i had higher expectations for sleeping dogs, and for the past week or so i've been enjoying prototype 2 when i encountered a game breaking glitch

working on gran turismo 5 and dragons dogma (awesome game), may pick up mortal kombat komplete kollection for $20 this week from the gamestop sale.

yeah ill wait until a drop below $25 or some BB deal.

I picked it up from Redbox last week as I had a few days off of work. Spent Wed-Fri morning playing it and enjoyed it. I was able to beat the main story of the game. There were some side quests (drug busts) remaining but I returned it Friday night. Overall I'd say it was fun and worth the rental. Definitely not something I'd pay $60 for. It was kind of cool that there was more hand to hand combat than gunplay. Made it a little different than most games these days.

Recently i have played this game and its really enjoyable game.it has lots of fun.

Will Redbox it.

I'm awaiting a copy from Amazon I nabbed for $40 and I cannot wait to play it.
Going off the impressions on GAF, I am going to love it. It seems like people who really dig John Woo flicks and Hong Kong cinema really enjoy it, so I am expecting too as well.
Funny how I initially thought it would flop and was not impressed by footage but was eagerly awaiting Darksiders II. I left the country before I could buy Darksiders II but after being able to get on the internet here and seeing what people thought of both, I ordered Sleeping Dogs and figure I will wait a bit on Darksiders II until it gets a bit cheaper.

I really enjoyed this game. Although I thought the campaign was a bit short, it was a really good game overall.

I also would definitely chalk it up to rental status since you can finish it pretty quickly...a $30 game probably. Maybe $40 since I still get value out of playing it.

I picked this up 2-3 weeks ago when I price matched the 2/$60 deal that Toys R' Us was doing over at Best Buy. I picked up this game and Darksiders II with that deal. I also picked up Prototype 2 using one of the @Gamer coupons for $20.

So far I've finished Sleeping Dogs and Prototype 2. I'm trying to finish all three games and trade them back into BB before that 100% promo ends. If I can, then I stand to actually MAKE money over what I paid for all three. I already dumped SD back to them for $33 and change.

Anyway, my impressions of Sleeping Dogs.

It's like GTA meets Saint's Row meets Arkham Asylum/Arkham City.

The combat system reminds me of AA/AC with the ability to block incoming attacks from enemies behind or to the side of you. The ability to learn new moves is kind of a waste though imo, as I just found myself doing the same 1-2 combos over and over in this game. Those combos largely consist of just mashing square and occasionally hitting triangle to block/counter an incoming attack from a secondary enemy.

I upgraded my characters health a bunch by finding most of the health shrines. But that brings me to my 'bad' points' about the game.

Once the main storyline is done, all you're left with are drug busts and whatever collectibles(shrines, lockboxes, etc) that you haven't already collected in your travels.

That's one of my main pet peeves with games nowadays, in that many of them pad the gameplay with collectibles of all manners to try and add hours to the total time for full completion of the game.

But in most cases those extras don't add anything significant to the game at all.

In the case of Sleeping Dogs the only collectibles I found interesting were the lockboxes and the camera hacking. With the camera hacking you have four unique numbers you need to figure out for each camera to unlock them. You start out with 0123 and then move numbers around to the right spot or change them if none match. The lockboxes were interesting, in that you twisted the left stick on the controller like a dial on a safe in order to get them to open.

Overall the game is fun, but definitely not worth $60.

I've also already finished Prototype 2 so that's likely going to BB for $18-19 and change and becomes a cheap rental. Then I just have to blow through the rest of Darksiders II before the 100% promo ends at BB and trade that back for $42, which is actually $10 more than I paid. So in the end, they're paying me $10 to have played three games completely.

My thoughts are similar to what everyone else has said.

It was a fun game, but not worth the $60 because it was so short. Aside from the main missions, the races and drug busts are pretty repetitive. Then you can find lockboxes, healthshrines, and statues if you're interested in 100% completion.
