They'd probably be able to tell by the serial # of the lens, but, ultimately it doesn't matter. The gray market lens likely comes off the same factory line as your US model (probably both made in Taiwan, though maybe Japan). It won't hurt resale value (as you can't even tell the difference), and it won't hurt your warranty either, as you don't get one since you didn't purchase from an authorized.

Generally, what grey market means is you paid 10% less for the same lens.

I have this as well as 24-70 and love both. Usually the 24-105 is on there when I'm trying to keep my kit light, but will have the 24-70 when I know I'll be shooting indoors a lot. At the same settings I generally get sharper pics with the 105, but the 70 is a full stop brighter and more dof control.

Actually, the answer to this is much simpler than others have suggested...go back through your last few months of photos and see what focal lengths you use. If you have a Windows computer, there are programs that do it for you. If you have Lightroom, there is a plugin that does it for you. If you find you are shooting at the wide end of your lens a lot, you'll probably like the 17-55 more, as it goes much wider than this. If you find yourself shooting at the tele end more, you'll enjoy the 24-105 more.

And consider your subjects. If you're shooting people, the 17-55 is gonna work better, both for its range and lower aperture. If you're traveling a lot or out in nature, you may find the 24-105 more versatile (except for really wide landscape shots)

Grey market just means that it did not enter the US through an authorized distributor. Yes they should have come off the same assembly line and should be from Japan. I believe all L lenses are made in Japan, other lenses may be from other manufacturing plants.

People, please don't overlook the fact that 24-105L is built for FF in general. That doesn't mean you can't use it or won't give good images. There are some things to keep on mind.

First among all things is max aperture. FF always has atleast 1 stop advantage compared to APS-C crop sensor. So to compare f/4 at crop is similar to f/2.8 on FF due to sensor size. Second 24mm might not be wide enough on crop sensor.

Also 24-105L + 5D MK II/III will consistently produce cleaner images at ISO > 800 & low light than 7D/XXD/Txi + 24-105L and very close to 7D/XXD/Txi + 17-55mm. Also both these lenses have upto 3 stops of IS.

Not trying to make this into crop vs FF discussion, but just don't buy 24-105L because it has red ring. You'll be disappointed.

I've seen this for sale at $799 so often that I wouldn't consider this a deal anymore, really. This is more like an everyday good price, but not a SD as many would tend to believe.

How long until we stop calling these daily deals? This has been popping up at least 3-4 times in the last few weeks.

It does not, unfortunately. Their warranty offering is their own, and you can trust it as you wish. Big Value is not an authorized canon retailer.

I really can't imagine any way it would. First off, its out of a kit, so you aren't even buying the correct package. And its not coming from a Canon authorized dealer, which would be another dagger. Plus, at this price, I imagine Canon wouldn't let them sell it with a warranty even if they were authorized.

Doesn't really change the deal to me; it's still $150 cheaper than the authorized versions, and cheaper than the refurb versions go for as well. It just makes it slightly riskier if something goes wrong in the first year
