I have both lenses, both are excellent but for crops i think the 17-55 is a better buy (for my uses anyway). I found that I often needed wider field of view so the 27-88mm effective view on a crop body for the 17-55 was a more usable range. If i needed a longer reach I would use my 100MM macro or my 70-200mm lens. But for walk around I found I used wider view much more frequently. The 17-55 is sharp even wide open however the only drawback IMO is that it attracts dust even with a filter it still seems to suck in dust but they don't appear in photos. I keep it in a camera bag when not in use.
