Meh, just can't find a really good price on the big SSDs. Waiting for them to hit <$300. Lowest I recall for a 512 was $320 on the OCZ Agility 4.

my feeling with these SSD is that all you really need is 256 if you're going to just install the OS and applications, and it would deal with write amplifications (making the drive last longer by not filling up all the space).. 512 is nice, but it just cost too much, and besides, it'll temp you to keep data on the ssd. regardless of the ssd, I'm not going to keep any data on it - putting it on my magnetic drive.

I'm really curious about the failure rates of the M5 using the micron nands. if the defect is the same rate as the m3, then I think people will be flocking to plextor drives. nobody wants headaches. I don't think the speed difference will matter then.

Your plan is fine for those with desktops, or really large laptops that can accommodate an SSD and a harddrive.

Most people have a laptop that takes a single drive. Therefore 512 is super useful. Who wants to have to attach an external drive just to play some music when in a coffee shop?

$60 premium over 2 x 256GB?!? How is spending $60 more than purchasing two 256GB drives a slick deal? If this 512GB drive was say, $300 then it would be worth buying. Instead, spend $170 on a better 256GB drive (Samsung 830 or Crucial M4) and call it a day.
