Can't change name on facebook without uploading a government photo ID?

RUsum1 9,535 1,696 August 29, 2012 at 06:23 PM
Did the airlines buy out facebook recently? I didn't know they were so hardcore about names. My current name isn't even remotely close to being legit but they let me create my account with it. Now I want to add a nickname and it says it can't because it's not my real name. Guess I'm stuck with it?? Or is there a way around this without tipping facebook off that my original name was fake to begin with?

edit: and what's with the sudden link to facebook with everything I do on this site? Why does ever message have a popup box asking if I also want to make the post on my facebook account? 99.8% of the world is not that interesting where every blog or forum post needs multiple mediums.

You'll get crazy newbies who call 3x a day for 2 weeks straight, and post argumentative paranoia demanding the rebate is guaranteed, in writing, by certified mail, on their doorsteps, by tomorrow evening. Then all the other newbie sheep freak out, and THEY call 3x a day, for 2 weeks straight, and the paranoia explodes. And suddenly everyone's carting their paper back to the retailer demanding a refund.

Well when I tried to do it through my account settings is when I get the error that I'm only allowed to use my real name (I guess whatever your original submission was). So I googled how to change the facebook page and I found a facebook link that eventually led me to a form to fill out if my names keep getting rejected

Delete it & create a new one (or better yet, don't).

Don't live your life on FB - all of those links you're seeing all over the place when you're logged in? That's the data that FB is collecting about you to sell to marketers who can now target you based on all of your web surfing habits. FB has a MOUNTAIN of data on you - they know where you surf to; then know where you live & where you eat out; where you shop & what you buy; what games you play and who you're friends with, etc etc etc.

Mark Z's idea for facebook is that EVERY TRANSACTION you do on the internet will go through them - this is why you now see a facebook logon on just about everything you can log into (including SD now). I never have & never will use that 'log in through Facebook!' link on anything I subscribe to, because I don't want ANY marketing company to know that much about me.

Just remember - if you use a free web service, you're not a customer - you're the product being sold. (I forget who said that originally, but props to them.)

just turn it off and you'll never see any of that again

settings & options > edit privacy options (scroll down)

there also should be a "do not ask me again" link in the popup itself which will also make it go away permanently.

We know how to turn it off. We're just not pleased that FB has invaded yet another website, in particular these forums where people help people freely, just out of the goodness of their hearts, and then comes the desperate money grubbing FB, trying to get in on the action for financial gain.
I know how to avoid stepping on a doggy turd on the sidewalk, but I'd be much happier if the turd just wasn't there.
Jeff said it so accurately, when he wrote, "Just remember - if you use a free web service, you're not a customer - you're the product being sold".
One by one, every single person who lives to a ripe old age, will come to regret interacting with FB, be it because of being solicited, or having his/her words taken out of context in a court of law, with no chance of denying it, when it's written in black and white for all to see, or maybe it'll be a crime committed against the FB member, as his/her information is too readily available and the criminals use it to their advantage.
Nobody's life should be that public, and if it is, you can be sure of one thing, it will come to bite you one day, maybe bad enough to change your whole life in a negative fashion.

is the recent slowness of the site due to the new facebook invasion? Half of the time my pages just get stuck loading so I have to stop and refresh, sometimes a couple times just for a page to load fully
