That's gonna hurt. I'm guessing breaking the sound barrier is the precursor to shitting your jumpsuit.

Did you know the body is made up of mostly water...and SPLAT is something body's do real good.

SIL used to work at a Longs that the Crime Scene Investigators would drop off the film to get developed...and she said that the bridge jumpers would cover a lot of ground. EEK!

What do you mean "break the sound barrier"? I hope you're not referring to speed, because unless he has a jetpack on, he's going to hit terminal velocity and stop accelerating.

Why won't Felix reach terminal velocity before he breaks the speed of sound?

Terminal velocity, a concept familiar to skydivers, refers to the point at which a falling object stops accelerating. Drag, or resistance, is one of the key factors causing terminal velocity. Bailing out at a very high altitude, where the air is thin, should enable Felix to break the speed of sound before reaching more dense air that will create drag and eventually result in his terminal velocity. Still, he'll want to streamline his body as quickly as possible to aid his acceleration.

They are projecting speeds over 700 mph.

I had the same question with regard to terminal velocity. Apparently, since the density of the atmosphere that high up is much thinner, there is less resistance to drag his maximum potential speed down. Therefore, he'll accelerate at -9.81 m/s^2 until he reaches a bit over 700 mph, then he'll begin to slow down as he reaches a denser air, until reaching the more common terminal velocity typical skydivers encounter.

Makes sense, but kind of counter-intuitive.

Edit: Also note that due to a lesser density and temperature of the air, the speed of sound is slower in the upper atmosphere.

The balloon he is going up in is 1/10th the thickness of a Ziploc bag, and can be damaged by 6 mph winds.

Interestingly enough, he will NOT be the first person to break the sound barrier while freefalling - http://www.barthworks.com/aviatio...reakup.htm (tl;dr - In 1966, an SR-71 basically exploded at over Mach 3 and one of the people survived, other did not.)
