Discover card - Sign up 5% Cashback bonus for 4th QTR

thanx just signed up so i guess this stacks with the regular 1% and ShopDiscover is different from this

I did some research on Discover website and found out 5% cashback offer only available for holders of Discover More credit card. If you have Discover More and signed up for e-mail reminders you get this. That's why OP received this by e-mail, that is not a special
offer but rather a regular quarterly reminder.

Sweet! I'll easily go through 1500 in 3 months through online shopping. A lot of times I'll spend that much in a single month!

The 5% quarterly promotions are typically instead of the normal cashback, which is actually 1/4% until you hit $3k in spending per year.

The Maximum credit card transfer you can do per month on Amazon Payments is $1000.
So you would have to do it over a 2 month period... a $1000 transfer ($50 cashback) and a $500 transfer ($25 cashback). That's even if Amazon Payments is considered an online purchase. I don't see why not.

Why wouldn't it work in conjunction with the 10% ShopDisover offers? They're different things. Here is the fine print from the 5% back:

* Earn 5% Cashback Bonus for Department store and online purchases from 10/1/12 (or the date on which you signed up, whichever is later) through 12/31/12, subject to a cap of $1500 in purchases. Department stores are defined as retailers selling a wide variety of merchandise, with separate checkout counters in each department.Amounts that are not charged to your card during your online purchase will not qualify. These purchases must post to your account by 12/31/12 and do not count towards determining your eligibility to earn 1%. Purchases made at warehouse clubs or discount stores are not eligible. If a purchase is coded for a category other than those listed above, it will not qualify. Rewards are added to your Cashback Bonus account within 2 billing periods. See Cashback Bonus Program Terms and Conditions for further details.

Yes, the 5% quarterly bonus amounts are unrelated to ShopDiscover. Discover pays the 5% quarterly amounts from their own funds, whereas the merchant pays the ShopDiscover rate. So, if you go thru the shopping portal, you should get both the quarterly bonus and the ShopDiscover rate.

They are unrelated programs and they're doing it during peak season precisely because they want us to shop with their card. The shopping portal amounts are paid by the merchants so none of it comes from their pocket - in fact the merchants probably pay them xtra on top of what we get for using the portal. If Discover would have a 5% quarter for grocery stores, restaurants or gas stations, why not online shopping? With tough competition from other cards which pay a higher basic rate (1% vs Discover 0.25%) and a bunch of portals paying rates similar to ShopDiscover, seems like a smart move for them.

Because the ShopDiscover bonus is worded as "total" cashback.
