From the email:

*Sign up to earn 5% Cashback Bonus for Department store and Online Purchases from 10/1/12 (or the date on which you sign up, whichever is later) through 12/31/12, subject to a cap of $1500 in purchases. Department stores are defined as retailers selling a wide variety of merchandise, with separate checkout counters in each department. Amounts that are not charged to your card during your online purchase will not qualify. These purchases must post to your account by 12/31/12 and do not count towards determining your eligibility to earn 1%. Purchases made at warehouse clubs or discount stores are not eligible. If a purchase is coded for a category other than those listed above, it will not qualify. Rewards are added to your Cashback Bonus account within 2 billing periods.

Since they are completely different programs, only someone who doesn't understand that would expect to see wording saying that they can be used together.

When I make a purchase, do I get up to 1% Cashback Bonus in addition to the ShopDiscover offer?
Yes, unless otherwise provided in the offer.

What is ShopDiscover?
ShopDiscover is an online shopping mall, exclusively for our cardmembers. ShopDiscover lets you earn 5% to 20% Cashback Bonus at top online retailers such as FTD.com, Hotwire, Overstock.com, BestBuy.com and many more! There is no limit to the Cashback Bonus you can earn through ShopDiscover. You simply link to a retailer’s site through ShopDiscover, pay with your card, and get the additional Cashback Bonus. It’s that simple.

Your move. Post something that says that the ShopDiscover bonus is instead of the normal or 5% cashback bonus you get for using the card.

I'm pretty sure you are correct, but given that the Discover site is down for maintenance at the moment, we can't tell for sure. I am fairly sure that the ShopDiscover bonus has not interfered with the normal (or 5%) Discover Card cashback in the past. As you say, they are unrelated programs.
Not a bad idea to ask them to confirm thru the message center when the site is back up but this is how it's worked in the past. The amounts are calculated and reported separately. Discover bears the cost for the regular rate (0.25% and 5% bonus categories) and the merchants bear the cost for the portal rates.

Well, given that the ShopDiscover rates are pretty high for some merchants, I wonder if Discover isn't kicking in something as well to encourage use of their card. But clearly they are different programs.

I've never heard of a portal website paying out-of-pocket -- the merchants pay them and they either pay the full rate out or keep some for themselves (for example, top cashback's website says their portal rates are higher than most other sites because they pass thru the full amount and make their money solely thru advertisement revenue; and Discover cust service has told me that portal amounts are paid entirely by the merchants when I've called to inquire about missing cashback). Though, it could be that Discover bears some indirect cost to incentivize a merchant to payout a higher portal rate on Discover's portal vs other portals -- like charging them lower transaction fees.

I can tell you that you DO NOT get both bonuses.

Proof:

The current category for my discover card is "summer fun" which means 5% back on gas stations, theme parks and movie theaters. I recently bought six flags tickets through sixflags.com using the shopdiscover portal hoping I'd get 5% that is offered on shopdiscover AND the 5% quarterly category bonus.

Lo and behold, when my statement came I did NOT get the shopdiscover bonus nor the email that usually comes a week after purchase saying I got the shopdiscover.com bonus. I confirmed this by speaking with a customer service rep too.

While I can't say for 100% that this will apply to the 4th quarter bonus, I expect the rules to not change.

Keep in mind also that the quarterly bonus also replaces the 1% or 0.25% you'd normally get. So its really a 4.75% or 4% on online shopping depending on whether you've already spent $3,000 in your anniversary year. Shopdiscover.com portal by contrast is 5 to 20% (depending on merchant) in addition to your 0.25% or 1%. So for circuitcity.com for example, the shopdiscover bonus is actually 5.25 to 6%.

I will still check with discover prior to using shopdiscover though starting in october.

I've had the opposite experience many times (shopping in a 5% dept store bonus category and receiving both the quarterly bonus and the portal rate). What excuse did they give you for not receiving the portal rate? The only valid reasons -- as far as I know -- are that you didn't comply with the T&C's on the merchant's portal page (such as, for example, they may not allow you to combine a coupon with cashback or they may not give cashback on certain items/packages). Occasionally, I don't receive the ShopDiscover email you're describing -- first, I check the merchant page to make sure I've complied with the terms; and, if I have, I send a message thru Discover's message center (they have a template message form for ShopDiscover reward inquiries) asking them to credit me the missing cashback. They almost always do.

Thanks for the reminder. I see there is another one too for 2% off the first few days in Sept. Looks like it's on groceries and such. Beats me why they make us manually sign up for these when we already have the card . It should be automatic signup for all card holders IMO.

How the heck do you sign up for this? I don't see any link anywhere when I log into my account, and there is no working link on this post. Anyone?
