If it matters, I live in Raleigh for a year once and hated it. The place was expensive to live (more expensive than Baltimore) and the taxes were pretty high too. Other places in NC not near Raleigh might have been better. I did not like having to pay big city prices for everything when I lived in a small place.

If you move to NC, rent before you buy so that you can get to know the area. Property taxes will be cheaper in Union County vs next door Mecklenburg County. (Even though, compared to up north, Mecklenburg County's property taxes are a bargain.) If you're considering Union County, look into northern South Carolina. Gas is about 20 cents a gallon cheaper there, and SC's property taxes are lower than NC's. From what I've heard, the majority of the new people in SC are from NC (getting away from all of the yankees moving in
).Practically all of the houses in NC have central air. The only houses I've seen that don't have it are older homes. Most of the subdivisions have community pools that are paid for with HOA fees. There has been a large influx of people to the big areas down here (Charlotte, Raleigh, etc) in the last 10-15 years, and the recession has hit NC hard because the economy had been booming. The job market can be difficult, so be sure that your current job is secure and/or that there is a market for your profession here. Last edited by mysticprincess; 09-23-2012 at 05:40 PM.. "Coupons...
