Question about Windows 7 to 8 upgrade
So how does the Windows 7 to Windows 8 work exactly? When you buy a qualifying computer you register your Windows 7 (key info etc) than you get a new Windows 8 key? If that is the case I can download Windows 8 when its out dl a clean install of Windows 8 install it on the qualifying computer and its a done deal? I am not familiar with the procedure so would like to get familiar with it.

you register the purchase of the computer with the vendor then they will send you the key probably a disc too or possibly just a download look at the vista to 7 upgrade stuff here for an idea when it comes out there will be plenty of information

Same goes for XP to 7, or 95 to 98, or 3.1 to 95. In the end usually its a benefit. Its not like 8 is out of left field its the next progression of the NTkernel that's been out since Windows NT 3. There are significany kernel enhancements so an upgrade is beneficial. To answer OP... It'll be an in-place upgrade..... You download the upgrade from MS and run it within 7 or Vista and it'll upgrade that system. I believe with XP they will make you do a clean install since the kernel is so different.. Doubt MS will let you use upgrade on any other computer than the one who downloaded it.... we'll see. Last edited by boltman2007; 09-04-2012 at 06:54 AM.. |

Totally depends on the vendor. Sometimes you're lucky & you get the bare OS only, and it's up to you to install whatever mfr software you think you need (and you can skip all of the bloat).
Other times you get an 'image' DVD/ISO that contains the OS plus all the crap that you might not want or need. Since this is an upgrade version, I'd say odds are very good that it'll just be the bare OS, since you can do an in-place upgrade with that. You can't do an upgrade from an image file - only a complete reload. So you should be OK. |

I looked up the stated facts for you...
Its definitely a "Pro upgrade" download a 2GB file and you do have the option to create USB or DVD upgrade media. Since its an upgrade it will look for a valid up-gradable OS. I think they are going to make you leave the original OS on initially for that check then offer you the format option during the install. Upgrade licenses are always tied to prior purchases so don't lose your old license info in case of re-install. I always prefer full licenses myself but for $15 or $40 its a great deal. Pretty sure its the same image as everyone else sans vendor bloatware. Last edited by boltman2007; 09-05-2012 at 06:20 AM.. |
