To my knowledge, they are pretty reliable now that the firmware on the SandForce controllers are so mature. There were some stability issues in the beginning when this product was first released. Virtually all of these problems have been addressed with multiple firmware updates. I have one of these myself, and it has been running for 1 year+ with no problems. I have just been vigilant with new firmware updates.

Maaan, vertex 3 for 50c a gig. Super super slick. People will whine about sandforce controllers, but that is all it is, whining. The latest firmware has been stable for months if not a year. I've been using a 2281 patriot pyro se with the same basic specs as a vertex 3 for 6 months 24/7, not a single problem.

Here is how the vertex 3 comprares to the very popular samsung 830 which hits $90 or so occasionally here on SD:

Really tempted. This seems like a great price but I'm looking for a drive with a higher capacity. Btw, anyone know what SSD's will work for a MacBook? I'm using a 2009 white non-unibody MacBook. Does it only depend on the physical size of the drive? Or are there other specs I should be looking at before I buy? Thanks in advance

I am not sure what they have done in the past but I am going to share my experience with ocz. I bought 3 ssd, two of which are agility 2. All of them died after a little over 1 year. I am sending my last ssd to RMA tomorrow.

After experiencing a failed OCZ Vertex drive that was working perfect for well over a year, but decided stop being recognized in the BIOS after resuming from sleep; I'll never waste money on this brand again. I'm getting a Samsung 830 Series.

It's so tempting to put on of these in my Alienware M11x R1. I'm worried the difference won't be evident due to the Core 2 Duo ULV processor. I may just keep saving for a touchscreen-equipped (Windows 8 compatible) ultrabook... or better yet Microsoft Surface Pro.

If you've got a desktop with a Intel Core 2 Duo / Quad or newer (Core i3, i5, i7) processor and don't see yourself spending more than $100 on an SSD, do yourself a huge favor and jump on this deal. The difference between a Vertex 3 SSD and a traditional HDD is phenomenal. It's difficult to accurately describe the change in experience. Even if you think you can't keep up with your computer in it's current configuration, the elimination of the cumulative volume of storage-centric lag will make your experience so much more pleasant. Stop waiting on your computer to start, waiting for programs to open and slowing down while your hard drive is grinding. You don't have to tolerate that frustration anymore.

I've installed dozens of SSD's for my friends and family over the last five years. I recommend all Intel SSD's, Samsung's 830-series and OCZ's Vertex 3 and 4 series. My experience and research has led me to believe OCZ has resolved their controller issues on new Vertex drives. And I strongly suggest a 120GB or larger SSD. There are few experiences more frustrating for the non-technically inclined than running out of space on the OS drive. 120 GB drives leave enough of a buffer for everything you could want except media and game collections.
