Deal is dead.
Update: No order cancellations yet.
Update: Credit cards have been charged.
Update: Orders placed prior to 10PM ET appear to be released to manufacturing. Orders placed afterwards are processing (fingers crossed).

Lenovo.com

1) Configure a X230 (laptop, not tablet). Works on "ThinkPad X230 Laptop " and "ThinkPad X230 Laptop with Faster Processing".
2) Change the processor to the slowest option, Core i3-3120M, and leave it there. The price on the right will reset to NA.
3) At this point, you have to add components until the price reaches the ordering systems minimum price (somewhere around $550, at which point NA changes to the price of the system, which should be a good $600 less than normal). Accessories and warranties seem to work differently and appear to raise the minimum price.

If you don't add enough stuff to make the NA turn into a dollar amount, you will be able to add the laptop to the cart, but it will not be orderable. It will throw an error and tell you to contact customer service. So make sure NA changes to some number before adding to the cart.

I added the following and got a price of $628.

-Premium HD display, 2x2 antenna
-4GB DDR3
-Backlit keyboard
-320GB HDD
-ThinkPad Series 3 Ultrabase
-DVDRW for Ultrabase
-6 Cell battery
-6 Cell external battery
-Bluetooth 4.0
-Intel WiFi 2200
-Webcam

The cheapest system I could configure was $558 (that was in "ThinkPad X230 Laptop with Faster Processing", but that option forces Windows 7 Pro, so it may deliver a lower price but you won't get as many accessories/upgrades).

Note: If you add and then remove the ultrabase, you will need to start over. The price will stick at NA. Make sure you add the ultrabase and don't remove it.

Amazon payments and PayPal failed for me, but Lenovo checkout worked just fine. Got confirmation email a few minutes ago.

Good luck!

Check your order status http://ovp.lenovo.com/lenovo-ovp/...dex.action

A word about minimum price:
Lenovo apparently created a minimum price that you must meet when configuring a system (probably to prevent pricing errors from going through). If you fall below this minimum price for a single system, the cart will throw an error and it won't let you order. Manipulate the system components (not warranty, software, or accessories). Once you reach this minimum, the NA price will disappear and you will be able to add it to your cart and order the system. Accessories do not appear to count toward the minimum price of ~$550 because the minimum price is enforced to the system, not to your entire cart contents. Accessories, warranties, and software are considered additional line items, whereas things like memory and hard drives are included in the system.

Good config here:

Anyone try the slice battery, do you recommend it?

I decided to sell the ultrabase for cheap to get rid of it since I won't be using it but am wondering if the slice is worth keeping?

I had the 9-cell in my original config
I also ordered the 9cell, slice and ultrabase. Im keeping the ultrabase for easy undocking with my external monitor but I might try to sell the slice since I dont really see myself needing more than 7 hours on a single charge.

Get a Sandisk 64gb SDXC card. The built in card reader can write over 30mb/sec.
I keep my LIghtroom catalog/RAW photos on the SD, and I would do a backup weekly on my NAS at home.
If you have a SSD, remember to disable hibernate and kill the pagefile. I have 16gb of ram, so my pagefile was 16gb on my SSD drive. Oh, and backup the partition on a SD card, delete the backup partition and expand your primary HDD partition size. You might also want to kill some of the app install files under c:\SWTOOLS. Most of the stuff you can download online when you need it. I left the drivers alone.

Edit: I was able to retain most of the apps that came with the laptop + install Lightroom 4, Office 2010 Pro. The total space used was about 26gb. I believe the laptop arrived with over 55gb of space gone :S

Thanks all for the responses and help.
The laptop comes with less than 60G available, which means more than 60G gone. I will try your ways to do clean up. I have 8G RAM, so I assume the pagefile is also 8G (not with it right now so I can't check)
For the recovery disk, can I just copy it to another disk or I need to burn it to dvd? I tried to copy to another computer and write to dvd, but it failed and complained one file (sth like backuptodvd.exe) missed. I checked the laptop but didn't find such file either.
Thanks

If we get the 10% concession refund from Lenovo, can we still get 10% rewards from discover card? I have used shop discover on this x230i but not sure if the 10% concession will invalidate discover rewards. Any way to check with discover on this?

I'm in a similar situation. I've received my cash back from discover and already applied $50 (total cash back was $59.30) of it towards my statement credit. I'm still waiting for the 10% refund from Lenovo. I hope Discover just takes back 10% of the refund that I receive from Lenovo and not the entire cash back amount.

I am unable to do any updates. Keep getting an error 643 which apaprently has something to do with Framework. I googled and found a solution but still not working (using MS fixit and repairing framework). Guess I will uninstall framework.
Are you talking about windows update? I had similar problem until i found a solution online. There was one update which had to update alone. Afterwards the rest went smoothly.
