I used to feed the WT Jerky treats to my dogs in the morning before going to work. One each as they loved them. When I got wind of the issue, I stopped feeding them. I still have 2 40 Oz bags on top of the cupboard waiting for a recall. I wasn't aware Waggin Train s owned by Nestle/Purina when I started feeding the treats a few years back.. They made appears to be a small US company putting pets first.
As various others have said, not worth one's dogs life/health. The BOFH - - - - Some days you're the dog, some days your the hydrant.
He who OP'd the -84 TD post. |

WOW.... I can't believe what I'm reading...and I really appreciate all that took the time to post those comments....I always send for the dog samples for my daughters dog and would never live it down if I did anything that harmed her..I am sure all pet lovers feel that way..so my question is...Why are they being offered in the first place? A free sample is one thing.......but a harmful product is another..This site should not endorse this product....in fact....WHY IS IT STILL ON THE MARKET?

Thank you all for the information! I hope this thread stays up as a warning for those who may have ordered the freebie from other sites. This was just posted in FW, so about to link to this info in the FW thread too.

Reason 2: From the manufacturer to Nestle/Purina, it appears that they care for your money more than they care for the wellbeing of your pet. Reason 3: Too many people are still buying the product. Spread the word and get as many people to stop buying it as possible. If sales tank, they'll yank the product off the market as they won't make money on it any more. As far as I'm concerned with the products. Where there is smoke, there is fire. A few cases could be anything, but the amount of current cases and the explosive growth of them leads me to believe something is wrong with this product. Based on the attitude of Nestle/Purine, I'm actively not buying other products made by them. Even if I did so before. be it pet or human products. I'm starting to believe that 'Made in China' equals 'Caveat EMptor'. |

The reason the FDA hasn't issued a recall is because they haven't identified the specific toxin in the treats. A lot of brands get their chicken jerky from China because of the cheap price. China does have a poor track record when it comes to pet food ingredients. If you are looking for a chicken jerky treat not made in China the Nudges brand is made in the USA and sold at Walmart. There is a pretty active page on Facebook about this if anyone is interested in talking further to other dog owners about this issue.

This morning I took my dog to the vet for her yearly check up. I asked the Dr. if jerky treats are okay to give a dog.
She said jerky treats have a lot of protein in them which is fine if given in moderation, usually just 1 a day, no matter what the size dog. The pet can run into a lot of health issues if given more which she says happens a lot with over feeding. She also said make your own that way you know what's going in them. This reminds me of the Greenie dog treats years ago when dogs were dying because of digestion problems. Some dogs scarf down their food without chewing properly while small dogs were given large treats not for their size. When in doubt, pass it up. |

New report on the jerky treats 360 dogs dead, 1 cat dead

My German Shepherd Died less than amonth ago from kidney failure. We gave him the Waggin Train Jerky from Costco for most of the six years he lived. He looked in perfect health until this year when he stopped eating and lost 20 pounds. Kidney failure is a gruesome death and we had to euthanize him so he wouldn't suffer. If you want to see your dog nauseas 100% of the time and then vomiting everything he eats followed by comvulsions that cause brain damage you should feed him these treats. "New report on the jerky treats 360 dogs dead, 1 cat dead" This is probably a very very small fraction of the actual deaths and sicknesses. That number is based on complaints file with the FDA. Most people don't even know about this issue. Last edited by rbwilton; 10-01-2012 at 04:49 PM.. |
