Just got my REBATE "documents received" email confirmation.

While this is a higher-end budget machine, the fit and finish are excellent. Sure, it's plastic - all plastic, but that doesn't mean it's trash, it just means it's plastic. For the TD price point, nothing beats the specs offered within its budget class.

For a baseline high-end machine (with the same internal specs as the k55a) + HD screen, metal and whatnot (bells and whistles) throw in an additional $800 if you're lucky. The TD k55a was a slickdeal after all. This machine is practicality not luxury.

As for me, I like the feel of the keys. The trackpad is well placed. And while the screen is not HD sharp and shows a bit of "funniness," I've adapted. I'm pleased and use this machine often as a throw and go setup. No worries, it does what is suppose to, quietly and efficiently.

You're wrong son. The Asus K55 features an aluminum construction. Features an aluminum body with a textured finish

fn + f9 disables/enables the touchpad. if you got on the 2$ logitech wireless mouse on sd a week ago you should be good. that's my setup right now Cool

Apropos, a leather wrapped steering wheel is not considered metal, but leather. In turn, a plastic wrapped computer is not considered metal, but plastic.

While the specs state "aluminum body," it most certainly has the look and feel of plastic, hence "textured [plastic] finish" would be more accurate. So in this case, it is plastic.

You stated that it was all plastic. You're wrong.

Nope. You simply read it wrong.

Try reading my statement again, perhaps you'll find I was right all along.

And this time, try reading it aloud.

It's poetry.

So it's been about 2, 2.5 weeks.

I know talking about negative elements of the laptop seems like I'm bashing the device but the nits I'm picking aren't big. I wish this had more USB ports, I wish it had a PC card slot to add usb ports to it or other such devices. I wish vertical resolution was higher than 768 pixels, I wished there was a way I could replace the optical drive with an internal HDD... would love to have a HDD and SDD, I wished I could bump up the ram to 16gb instead of maxing out at 8. I wished it supported the 5ghtz 802.11n wifi band.

Having said that, the 3.0 USB is nice, the fit of the laptop is very nice and seems better than my ~3 year old MSI laptop. I'm looking forward to bumping up the ram to 8gb in this thing. Despite my problems with the trackpad, when I wasn't gaming the trackpad had a nice feel to it and it was very useful. TF2 (the game I'm playing) plays pretty well on the laptop and I'm pleased with performance, most of the time. (not when rocket jumping or when I get hit with stutters.)

Often you can use different touchpad drivers or simply remove gestures, etc. and have the touchpad work just fine.

I'm seeing a strange problem occur. Probably an odd driver issue but sometimes the screen randomly decides to adopt a brownish hue. When I go to the graphics property and start the process of recalibrating the colors, that resets everything and fixes it. But I'm not sure what is causing this.

(edit) So during windows boot up, everything is fine and then suddenly the brown hue takes over. But when I go to windows video settings and start messing with the controls (not even applying it yet) touching something like hue fixes it. This is starting to annoy me.

just wanted to say, I added 8gb of RAM....bought this kit right here

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Pro...6820313300

it was $30 last week....factory came with one 4gb stick and now I'm running two 4gb sticks in DDR mode...totally worth it! now it's time for an SSD and this thing is almost ultrabook status without the high def screen & slim form factor Wink

Although it says that 8gb is the max, I have been doing a lot of research and it appears that maybe we can put 16 or even 32 gb of memory in our laptops. I have found two websites that sell this laptop and offer upgrades to 16gb of memory. And one of them even says that it is possible to get an optical drive bay hard drive caddy allowing us to put a second hard drive in the space where the optical drive usually goes. The two sites are below:

Why did you replace the 4G stick that was already there? Why buy 2 4G's instead of just 1 and putting the new one in the open slot? Sorry, just asking, as I've got one of these laptops arriving this week and want to bump up the RAM from 4G to 8G. Thanks!

Yeah I could have bought one stick, I know....but I want to buy a complete kit and not have mis matched sticks...I just didn't want to run into any compatibility problems.

Btw, It's 2 screws on the bottom of the laptop and you have access to the HDD and memory modules....easy pesy...thanks Asus Smilie

OK, cool. Thanks! I may go out on a limb, and get an 8G stick, and see if I can take it over the 8G max that they say it can use.
