Chicago teachers on strike

We are all slaves to our survival. You might as well call people food, air, water, and shelter slaves. Doing whatever it takes to live. Most people survive on wage labor. That's not a bad thing. I'm saying out of the 8%, I bet there are a lot of laid off teachers that would be happy about receiving a pay raise over their old job to take a job in Chicago.

One of the reasons Rahm is fighting the "laid off teachers get back in line for new jobs with priority" thing from the union is that he plans on using it to lay off "bad" teachers. One may come to the conclusion that Rahm is not a brilliant strategist in this regard and it has probably been used by just about everyone else already... ergo those other laid off teachers may not be of the quality one is searching for to begin with.

Sure. But moving to an ultra expensive city for 80% of the national income average isn't exactly the kind of economic incentive that have rationally self interested people frothing at the mouth.

Great teachers probably don't see that offer and think salvation lies within.

What other professions requires you to get a bachelors, then spending years getting accredited, so you can basically hit a glass ceiling in 14 years

To become a math teacher i need a degree in math. after 14 years working at a company using your math degree wouldnt you expect to make $34.50 an hour?

That math seems pretty fuzzy (I know it's not your math, just saying).

In order to get 34.50 per hour from 74,798 per year, you're looking at a teacher who works 40+ hours, 52 weeks per year. I know that teachers put in more than just teaching time during the year, but it just seems like a bit of a stretch.

Chicago has some ritzy areas I'm sure since it's the financial capital of the midwest. Oprah lives there. Obama lives there. However, like most major cities, the middle-class moves out into the suburbs and the poor people remain behind.

Houston is another great example. You know the areas in Houston proper where there's a bentley in every driveway. Yet, there are the areas where you don't go out during the day or night if you're a white person.

But how many are firing all their teachers?

The ten districts issuing the most layoff notices, according to the CTA, are:

Los Angeles Unified – about 9,500
San Diego Unified – more than 1,600
San Juan Unified – 458
Capistrano Unified – 392
Sacramento City Unified – 389
Moreno Valley Unified – 332
Long Beach Unified – 309
San Bernardino City – 251
San Francisco Unified – 210
Sweetwater High School District – 209

Not counted in these numbers are first- and second-year teachers who, because they’re not tenured, can be laid off without notice. That number could reach into the thousands, but it’s hard to know, because the state doesn’t keep track of it.

They don't have to fire all of them.

Sound like there is a decent pool already out there.

Layoff notices do not mean they're actually being laidoff.

They did that here in San Diego and rehired many if not most of the teachers who got notice.

Now one could make an argument that some better teachers are being laidoff if the list is based on seniority....

They work well over 60-70 hour work weeks for 9 months of the year then they do a small chunk of work in the summer.
