Renting car for a month - what are the best options ?

I will be going back to my home country by November 2012 end and i will put my existing car for sale at the start of November month. Now after listing my car on craigslist etc i am not sure when it will be sold but from the time it is sold to the end of month, i will need a rental car for my office commute and weekend commute. I need the cheapest (economy) car.
So what are my best options if i would want to rent a car for a month. I do not intend to take the car outside city and daily commute on weekdays might be around 25 miles and on weekends less than that.
What sort of cost i am expecting and what car rental company would be good.
I have very limited knowledge about car rentals in US and have only rented once and that too was for just 2 days.
Does my (existing) car insurance in any way help in reducing the cost of rental ?

Any help in this will be appreciated.

And your current insurance should cover your rental car, but you should call your agent and verify. You may have some weird terms, and it depends on your coverage.

Once you get rid of your car, you will not have car insurance.

Why would anyone maintain auto insurance if they did not have a car? The insurance is on the car, not the person. What would be on your policy if you sold the car?

Yes certainly there is a market for those "umbrella" policies. Insurance companies realized that, "Wow people are so stupid they will buy anything so let's sell them this policy". It is pretty simple, buying auto insurance when you do not own a car is stupid.

DG, do you know what an umbrella policy is? Do you know what happens if the limits on your policy are exceeded? It's a slim chance happening and a cheap policy for 1 or 2 million coverage to cover it. Homeowners, and others with assets like that in their name, shouldn't be without one!

No, it's stupid to make uninformed, uneducated statements to people asking for help. If you are continually using a car rental company, temporary car services like Car2Go and Zipcar, or borrowing friends' vehicles, then it is worth it to get your own insurance instead of getting coverage through the rental company, or relying on your friends' insurance. You mistakenly believe that "the insurance is on the car, not the person." However, that is not true. Liability coverage follows the driver, not the car. For the love of god, please read:

So, for anyone that needs to rent a car for a full month, maybe paying the car rental company $20 per day (another $600!) isn't such a slickdealer option, and it is better to get coverage through your own means. In addition, if you were often borrowing friends' cars, maintaining your own policy even though you don't own a vehicle is the responsible thing to do, because if you end up causing an accident, it's your insurance that covers everything instead of the friend that is nice enough to regularly loan you his car.

Extended warranties are worth their weight in gold when you need them, they are worth their weight in shit when you do not. I'll get one of these umbrella policies the same time I get a policy to protect me from meteors crashing down on my head.
