The only thing surprising me is that those $1 pizza places are in some of the most expensive
areas of the city, while you would find it harder to find them in some cheap areas of the city.

It's a shame that "Entire value per voucher must be used in a single purchase, either online or in-store, by same customer",
because otherwise people could just use it to buy a small snack from time to time,
rather then going to a newsstand or something.

I do quite a bit of shopping at Trader Joe's in Chelsea; you could go there and have it delivered if you don't want to shlep it home. I usually stick to my neighborhood stores, NSA and Western Beef, but I make it a point of stopping at other supermarkets for their sale items when I know I'll be in the area. (Closer to you, I would go to Third Ave & 17th St for Met Food, or Morton Williams, but absolutely only for their sale items. When I do volunteer work once a week on the upper east side, I stop at Key Foods for the cheap stuff.)

When I had a car, I would go to NJ and make a run of Walmart, then Sam's Club, then Shoprite, then (if I wasn't exhausted) Pathmark. But I gave up the car a year ago when I was laid off and only recently went to Walmart by bus from the Port Authority. I could only buy what I could carry home, so no frozen, no cans, nothing too heavy. In spite of the $8 r-t cost of the bus, the savings were well worth it and it's fun to see a variety of items that you will never see them cram into NYC supermarkets. If you hate Walmart, you could always go down to Pathmark in Chinatown, or to Shoprite in Jersey City via the PATH train.

yes, getting pizza for $1 a slice and bagel w/ butter for $1.35 is still the best deal you'll see in nyc. Even in NJ a pizza slice is double to triple that and a bagel with butter is about $1.65-$2 now.

farking hate it.. it is like I am paying everyone's rent. And thanks to tourists and what not, lot of these stores get away with ridiculous customer service. If I could find a job, I will move far far away from NY/NJ

wish micro food only walmart would come to nyc to pressure keyfood and associated to close their crappy locations. Not all are bad. I have a new keyfood near my apt blocks from old crap one. It is not at cheap as shoprite and pathmark but staff and quality is excellent. Fairway is great but too far

When I was at Walmart a couple of weeks ago, I bought a variety of Fancy Feast for my foster cat to see what she liked, 58 cents a can. I found that my fussy feline likes only a couple of flavors very much, so I just went to Gristedes and paid 99 cents for the same Fancy Feast. It just about killed me.

So it's really easy to rationalize paying for public transportation to get there because it's not hard to reap savings. (I saw quite a few people using luggage on wheels to haul their stuff back to the city.)
