United airlines card that earns miles?
Ok so last November I got in on the SW card with 50,000 miles and ended up getting a card for my wife as well. We used them miles to fly 4 of us to orlando for free and we still have a boatload of miles left and our well on our way to companion status for next year. But the problem is we want to go to Hawaii next year and SW no go. The most popular airline out of Philly to Hawaii is United. So I need a deal on a good card so we can start racking them up!

Uhm, you mean like the United CCard?
I'd suggest signing in to your United account and checking their offers. Mine is at 65,000 points, or really 50k. I personally got the British Airways card. 100,000 miles for two annual fees of $75 ($150 total). Booked a couple tickets to Kauai for 50,000 miles and $44 in fees. They, atleast from the West coast are cheaper than AA/UA and you just fly on Alaska or AA. From east coast you may have better luck with AA/UA though as it's more of a fixed mileage redemption instead of a distance based one. Alternatively get the Chase Sapphire preferred card and get the 40,000 points which can be used as $500 in travel credit OR transfer to United as 40,000 miles. Personally I'd say get both the UA/Sapphire card just to make sure you have enough miles as availability to Hawaii can be limited and you may have to pay more than the saver award rates. It's a 1:1 transfer partner. You can also transfer them to British Airways but it may not be as worthwhile given where you're trying to go. I actually transferred a bunch of Chase UR points to my Hyatt account. Getting a nice 1,300 square foot ocean view suite with club lounge access for a whopping 8,000 points ($80) a night! Chase UR points are extremely valuable. Far more valuable than the penny a lot of people I know use them for! Also, a flight from Philly to Hawaii is going to be more than 20,000 points R/T. I think a minimum it's 40,000 points (you made it seem like you could get 2 flights to Hawaii which, atleast if looking at a R/T isn't the case). Last edited by LivninSC; 09-10-2012 at 02:20 PM.. |

I definitely checked the flights and I thought that it said saver something 20,000 points. I also signed up for the united mileage club. So you said that I can check offers and there is a 65k one? I don't think i can get approved for both cards without taking a hit on my credit score. I already have to cancel the SW one I got last year.

When I log in to my UAL account there is a pic on the main page that is an offer for their mileage card where I'd get 65,000 miles. 50,000 is for meeting the minimum spend, an additional 5,000 for adding an authorized user, and 10,000 for another large spend (I think $25k??). If you can ONLY get one card I'd go for the UA card. It's an additional 10,000 miles however if you need two tickets you'll need to get approved for both as a R/T to Hawaii from mainland US is at a minimum of 80,000 miles AND that's if you can find availability on your dates. Have you even seen if the dates you want are available at the "saver" rate? Go here and put in your dates/airports and see what they offer. http://www.united.com/web/en-US/a...Award.aspx For example on the date I'm going to Kauai next year the only availability is a 40,000 mile economy class ticket (although there is a 40,000 mile first class saver so I'd totally take that instead) however on the way back there is a 20,000 mile economy class ticket. Yep ton's of dates available, not going until july. Also didn't realize that it was 40k rt, but no worries I need 4 tickets anyway so any amount I can save is good. Even one free ticket would be nice, but if I can somehow call them and get them to offer me the 65k one then I should be able to hit 80k by time I need to book.
