I don't use subsidized contracts. Previously I was on month-to-month, but value plan saved me about $20/month plus got unlimited minutes (5 lines, 2 with data).

I always buy my own phone because I "upgrade" whenever I feel like it. Plus, subsidized "cost" is higher than the up front savings.

would deals like that do anything for someone with a gs2 under contract?

Rumor from a friend is that the Iphone5 is being released on Sept 12. That's why T-Mobile is coming out with this.

Iphone 5 will be announced on September 12th (that is not a rumor but confirmed fact). Not released to the market. It usually takes about 2-4 weeks min. before it shows up at the carriers.

I was hoping that T-Mobile would be allowing existing customers a shot at upgrading... this deal is for new activations only. Just tried to get around it but no such luck. My upgrade price is $549.99 :\

I think $149.99 or even $199.99 with a new two-year contract would be reasonable but they aren't offering even that to existing customers. And heck, I transferred to T-Mobile with my own phone more than two years ago (so I never got a free phone nor was I ever locked into a two-year contract prior).
