I'm changing jobs very soon.
I'm leaving a "big bank" where I work in retail sales and moving to a small-medium size business where I will be working in IT. I have a background in accounting, experience in banking and IT, and can't wait to make the change. I enjoy working with my hands and being part of something - helping it grow and making it all happen. I'm lost at the bank and can't stand going to work every day. I can't stand making sales calls.
I am walking away from some great benefits. Free life insurance (1x annual salary), $250,000 in additional life coverage for $8/mo. LTD benefits of $2500/mo for $5/mo. Cheap full-coverage medical and dental, etc. I'll receive a single-premium plan (paid by employer) at new job, but I don't think it will be anywhere near what I'm receiving now.
I've gotten quotes from State Farm for both Life and LTD coverage. Life coverage of $250,000 for 20 years fixed term at $30/mo. LTD coverage of $1250/mo for $28/mo. I'm 23, currently in banking and moving to work closer to that of an electrician. From my understanding, I should get the coverages in place before I leave my job at the bank (for lower rates).
Anyone have any input on replacing these benefits? Anyone make a similar change and need to replace those benefits? I'm closing on a new house on 9/24 and want to have these things in place in case something were to happen. I will likely change employment approx. 2 weeks after we close.
After we get married, I plan to get in on the benefits my Fiancee will have as a teacher in NY. I'm assuming I'll be able to ask for the premium paid for health insurance as an increase to my salary.
