My 5-year old has this tablet and it is great for playing games. Much cheaper option than something like a Nintendo as the apps are generally free or well under $5. At this price it is great for a kid. I strongly recommend getting a micro SD card and installing Cyanogenmod 7. This gives you full Android 2.3.7 and allows you access to the full Google Play and Amazon app stores. I just added this to the wiki.
It is very easy to install Cyanogenmod 7 (full version of Android) on these tablets. It makes for a much more functional device with full access to the Google Play market of apps. You can remove the card anytime and the device will boot up just like normal as a Nook Color. Instructions for installing Cyanogenmod [quinxy.com] If you are uncomfortable performing the steps above you can simply purchase an micro sd card from amazon with the software preinstalled. Insert the card when powered off and turn back on. Link to purchase SD card with Android preinstalled [amazon.com] Last edited by rastascott; 09-12-2012 at 09:46 AM.. |

This is the rom [xda-developers.com] that seems to be getting a lot of continuous support for the NC. It is based on CM7.

CM9 is laggy, but CM7 off a Sandisk class 4 uSD is plenty responsive unless you load a ton of apps, or move a lot of apps that are on your launcher page to the SD partition. For what you do with this (it is not a phone) CM7 is better in my opinion. But go ahead and burn a second uSD triple boot rom to another card and see which OS you like! I'm triple booting off a 32gb sandisk, running most apps off CM7, a few off CM9 where they are designed for HC or ICS, and sometimes stock to read books. Hulu Plus worked when I subcribed (might not now, they changed the program), but Kindle and Plex run fine. Third party reader programs allow you to use the volume buttons for page turns, several have night modes. At a minimum this tab is a nice no-risk way to learn about rooting and roms, since then I have been comfortable doing all that to run CM on our cel phones and Touchpad, do Nandroid backups, install kernels, run nightlies bla bla bla. Any SDer who doesn't have one of these lying around by now is late to the party. You can get one now, get a Nexus later when they start pushing Nexus refurbs and have developed great rooted roms, and have both for the same price as a Nexus now. Thanks Slickdealers:

I have lots of these.
The CM7 software mod is finally very stable. It's not really powerful enough to run CM9 or CM10 but with the modern launcher that comes with CM7 it's a very good value. Last edited by aegrotatio; 09-12-2012 at 11:17 AM.. |

overlock it
For those who prefer the stock B&N, there are stock roms with overclocked kernels available on android forums but I think it's a more modest increase to 800~1Ghz. |
