If you work allows connection to the VPN, you should be able to bypass any other filters.

An alternative to this is to get cheap lowend VPS and setup your own VPN server. These run as low as $15/yr (e.g. buyvm.net) but of course requires a little bit of work on your part to setup.

Can someone explain to me how save is it? For example I know that a lot of people use it to download torrent files and stay anonymous. Is this one of the reasons to use it? Also comparing to other similar services how stable / sold / safe is it? Thanks!

You basically get a shared ip address. Since multiple people are using the same ip address at the same time, tracing back is difficult

Here's the thing though - how is privacy handled in a situation like this? I know many VPN providers keep no traces or logs, which will increase your anonymity online, but having your own VPS can be easily traced back to you through the static IP of your server. I understand that the authorities will get you if they're so inclined, but in the case of someone who's torrenting files, I would think a dedicated VPN provider is safer.

I could be wrong though. Can anyone shed some light here?

I dont totally agree with this idea though. If someone want to track what you are doing and if you are behind your own VPN server, that person has to go through your ISP to see how many GB of encrypted files are being sent through your server. Now, if you are living in a city where there are few more private organization use VPN through same ISP, then I dont think that huge encrypted data can be easily identified as yours. Secondly, if you can able to encrypt your data with 512 bit, some one has to raid your house to see what exactly you are doing.
