I use similar but older version with 1st gen i3 and ATI graphics, same 17" screen and chassis. Installed SSD in it and it is super fast, runs all games with decent settings. Build quality - just fine, not super strong, but what can it be with this size and making it skinny. I'd get one of those if needed

Reliable in what way? Build quality may not be top notch, but hearing a few people talk about reliability doesn't do much.

According to this - http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2...243,00.asp (2011 laptop reliability survey), Acer is about average in terms of reliability, and they actually rank quite high in terms of percentage of laptops that need repairs (top 4 in that category).

Acer is supposedly the 'budget' brand, but it also gives you pretty decent bang for the buck.

As for this particular deal, it's not bad. Decent enough screen, decent processor, enough ram, enough graphics power to run a lot of games on lower/medium graphics settings.. for the price, it's not a bad deal if the specs fit your needs.

That's too bad. Presently not many cheap deals are running since back to school shopping is mostly finished. So maybe these aren't the greatest deals but just letting us all be aware of what's available right now. On a positive note, the initial Amazon reviews are favorable, so seems like people like it.

Acer laptops are terrific. I also have Asus & HP laptops but prefer the Acer. Recently I bought two Gateway NV75S26u AMD A6-3402M (Acer bought them out) and they too are great and play games quite well. I just purchased a Refurbished Gateway NV75S02u AMD A8-3500M 1.5GHz 4GB 640GB 17.3" for $259 (plays games better than the A6). They are selling on Ebay for around $425 (new at $500-$600). I suspect that because it wasn't an HP, Toshiba or Asus label that I got for the price that I did. It just arrived unblemished and looks brand new. Morale - you can get a real great deal on Acer's & Gateway.

I could name you a few laptops that I had problems with that were top brands that had problems from the get-go. Yeah, Acer is cheap, but not THAT cheap. My girlfriend is running a low-end Acer right now with no problems whatsoever. I had a 3830TG that gave me excellent battery life and just worked.

"There are no dumb questions" is truly the perfect trap for making dumb people reveal themselves.

its funny. i try not to hate on acer so i never say anything because i realize acer is still skewed in my mind from back in 1999 being "budget" desktops and frowned down upon and that branding has never left my brain... but no computer manufacturer is without flaws. i actually think acer likely builds better budget laptops that the big brands since that is what they do... when you have dell/hp making their budget laptops i often find people getting into trouble, but i do enjoy big brand premium lines like xps, envy, qosmio, vaio s/z-series etc.

Price is what you pay (slick)- Value is what you get (deal).
