How can you tell before buying if a widescreen monitor supports vertical orientation?
I'm building a new computer and want to have 3-4 vertically-oriented monitors. In shopping for the monitors, though, I'm not sure if all widescreen monitors support vertical orientation. I figured that was a property of the video card/computer rather than the monitor (from the monitor's perspective, what does it care which way we interpret the ordering of its pixels?), but a couple people I've talked to have said only certain monitors support that.Is that true, and if so, how can I be sure a monitor I'm buying supports a vertical orientation? |

I have one here (IHP 2408H) and it has a pretty sophisticated base assembly to be able to go into portrait mode. You can be sure that any monitor for sale that has that ability, will have it clearly written, most likely in the title. |

Awesome, thanks to both of you. I was chatting with customer support somewhere and he suggested that the way to tell if a monitor will work in portrait mode is if it has a Vertical Refresh Rate listed, which suggested to me it was a monitor setting, too. I'm planning to get a pair of two-monitor bases to use for this set-up.
Thanks again! |

I should have clarified that when I rotate my monitor, the image rotates by way of the monitor's own program.
That is to say that I do not rotate the image from the video card. I just turn the monitor, and at a certain point of rotation, much like a tablet, the image rotates by itself. The necessary software came with the monitor, naturally. PS: Whatever it costs you to buy something similar now, no matter how expensive it is, at least you'll know that you'll be paying less than I did. When they first came out, they were a shade under $1,000 and I waited and waited for a special and got one of the last new ones around out of some store near Annapolis for $550, lol... for a 24 incher, and I felt like I'd just gotten the deal of the century. Dang things were expensive then. I can't remember exactly how long I've had it, but my best guess is 5 years. Are you even going to use a base or just mount them on a stand? Bear in mind, that if it's a fairly big screen, working on a monitor in portrait mode, will give you a crick in the neck after awhile. Last edited by RockySosua; 09-13-2012 at 10:07 PM.. |
