Another question that leaves nearly no clue and lots of guess work.

How far is your garage to the house? Does the garage have wall power socket ready? Do you have ethernet connection in the garage? Where is your router? What's the model of the router? Does the router have usb port? Is the router 3rd party firmware compatible? What's your budget? How much (approximate) incremental/differential data that need to be backed up daily?

rsync is a server-client based protocol, you most likely need the external drive connect to a rsync server for the job. Which means that you need a ~$30, ARM based computer with ethernet and usb ports plus the expense of getting the network established from the house to the garage. Or with a router in the garage doing wireless bridge to the main router in the house but it has to have usb port and is optware friendly to be a rsync server if you don't have much to back up and can stand the slow file transfer speed.

pseudo-related question: I want a cheap way to backup data from my house to my detached garage. Is there any way I can get by with just a router and usb drive, or will I need a computer out there? Thinking rsync here.

initially a lot, but I will probably do that locally, and then continuous backup of added documents, images, home vids etc. Speed doesnt need to be fast, just fast enough to keep up on a daily basis.

I, personally, would just buy a NAS if you are thinking of buying a PC anyway and then running an Ethernet cord out to your garage and plugging it in. I am trying to avoid buying a computer, I have too many already! For $170ish it looks like I can pick up a router and hard drive that will have me completely covered. Only downsides is that I will have to manually check the drive health every so often.

It'd be easier to have a router with a usb port that works as an NAS. Therefore you can stream your wank material wirelessly to your spank box.

I was going to say Costco has their awesome return policy, but it's only 90 Days for electronics. Still may be worth it considering you don't have to deal with warranty and if a drive were to fail it would probably fail within three months with regular use.
Of course you'd probably want to fill it up to the brim with data a few times to check if it's a lemon when you get it
