I wouldn't close these cards too quickly. I am in my 20s and closed a couple of these mileage cards after having them for over a year and it dropped my credit score from the 730s to 670s. This is with no other activity. And the cards were being used.

FYI, you can pay with miles by trading in 10K miles for every $100. So if you have a $311 ticket, often you need 40K miles OR you can use 30K miles to take the price to $11. So just think that every 10K equals $100.

I was just about to mention this. Pay with miles is the only way I use Skymiles. It's a great use of miles for domestic travel.

I assume you all caught the part about the $100 statement credit ONLY working if you make a Delta purchase, right?

I want to appy for the card. But I was denied in the past for other credit cards, due to 1 cell phone collection on my credit history ( although my credit score is 760 and very low utilization ratio) I have a AMX blue cash credit card for many years, do you guys think I could get approved. Thanks.

The only thing you can do with skymiles is to turn them into cash. I had over 100K, did not find any suitable flight to Europe within more than half year ahead. I cashed out in sears gift cards at 1c/mile and I'm glad I'm out.

$5000 is an awful lot to spend compared with other credit card deals.

I have about 200k in Delta Skymiles.

Please note that it is usually very difficult to find a flight for 25k miles. On average, most flights I see are 40k round trip.

International flights are VERY hard to find. Even though flights to Asia are listed on their tables, if you try to book a flight to Bangkok, for example, they tell you that the "low priced flights are sold out". I actually tried booking at their max 365 days in advance, and it was still "sold out".

Bottom Line: This is still a good deal, but you will probably only get 1-2 free round trip out of this.
I have this exact same experience. Delta is, after USAIR, the number one worst frequent flyer program. As another slickdealer corrected me when I last disparaged Delta Skymiles, these miles in actuality do NOT expire... so you can hoard your unspendable skypesos until manyana!.

i do agree that delta is fast becoming skypesos but it's still a spanking good deal for moi for travel to southeast asia. 80K flights were pretty much available in feb/march and september/october of 2012. 70K means i only need to transfer 10K from my million points of amex for an economy flight.
From what I understand it's impossible to get a flight to Southeast asia with delta miles. If it were possible, I'd be all over it. Not possible, I pass. So does anybody ever use these successfully for Asia travel?

Delta miles are joke! I have over 12k
Two years ago, it worth a lot. 12k can be redemed toward two RT flight to Asia.
But NOW I spent 4k just on a ONE WAY flight from DC to Las Vegas.
If you do the math, Delta points become junk, it only worth 1/4 of its original value (two years ago)
