I received an e-mail from Petco with mystery savings at B&M stores on Saturday, September 15th 2012. The savings levels possible are 10%, 15%, 25%, 50% off your ENTIRE purchase. Thanks to velocityhead for figuring out the percentage levels!

This discount is only good on SATURDAY 9/15 and you need a PALS card [petco.com]! Remember to ACT SURPRISED when you get 50% off - it's supposed to be a mystery!

Coupon terms:
Mystery savings amount of 10%, 15%, 25%, or 50% will be applied at checkout. Present coupon and Pals Rewards card to receive this offer. Not valid on the purchase of gift cards, prior purchases, online or with any other coupon offer. Void if copied, transferred and where prohibited by law. Single-use coupon, limit one per household. Valid at either Petco or Unleashed by Petco. Valid on in-stock products only (not services, such as Grooming). Selection varies by store. Valid only on 9/15/12.

Update 9/16:
See my statement below in regards to the usage of this coupon.
If you purchase something through a post on our site, Slickdeals may get a small share of the sale.

For all those saying Petco lost a ton of money on this:
Quote from Phasers View Post :
Petco is not publically traded, but petsmart is, and has a profit margin of about 30%. Because of this I think we can reasonably assume that petco's profit margin is about the same.

Keeping in mind that overall profit margin factors in labor and real estate costs, as well as utilities and of course merchandise costs, then it is very safe to assume that the merchandise markup must be way more than 30% to offset these other expenses in order to have an overall 30% profit margin. Aside from the variable cost of merchandise, the labor and real estate costs and utilities are fairly fixed costs: i.e. Paid regardless of sales volume amount (paid if the store has $0 sales or $10,000 sales).

Therefore, I think it is quite reasonable to assume the markup on retail items is probably at least 100% vs wholesale costs. So this coupon for 50% off probably means for one day Petco averaged selling at around wholesale price. Good for revenue, bad for profit margin, probably didn't lose much money, if any.

To clarify the math- for every $100 petco currently sells we can assume $30 is profit, based on petsmarts profit margin.

Now let's assume that out of that $70, only $40 is the wholesale cost of merchandise. This means $30 is allocated to the fixed costs of labor, etc I laid out above.

Continuing on, let's say Petco sells the $100 of merchandise for $50. The variable cost of the merchandise in this case is still $40, so petco is 'making' $10 off the sale. Now that $10 might not cover the $30 in fixed costs above, but those fixed costs would have been paid REGARDLESS. This means if petco had not sold anything, they still would have paid that $30.

Now, assume because of this promotion, petco sold 5 times as much stuff as it would normally have sold. This means $500 worth of merchandise where it would have normally sold only $100.

The sales price was $250, the variable cost was $200 ($40 x 5). The fixed cost remains the same, at $30. So petco still made $20 overall in this scenario, just at a lower profit margin.

Considering the lowest coupon amount was 10% off, anyone with a coupon at a normal sales volume level buying their regular $100 worth of stuff would have paid $90, and petco would have made the same $20 profit, albeit at a much higher margin percentage.

TL;DR: I may not have exact numbers, but I do in fact have a good idea what petco's margins are.
This ended on September 15th

Petco changed the 50% off page at about 2PM PST so it prints a 10% coupon. DO NOT USE 50% LINK IN THE OP - it's 10% now.

PETCO CHANGED THE DIRECT LINK TO THE COUPON GRAPHIC at ~5pm PST

THERE ARE NO LEGITIMATE SOURCES FOR THE COUPON NOW, ONLY PDF AND JPG IMAGES. Stores have been told to limit the coupon to a max savings of $25, so if you have a 50% off, only buy $50 worth of stuff. (Who wants to call corporate and complain if you are an actual P.A.L.S member?)

50% off works EVERYWHERE.

PDF file was printed directly from the OP link before Petco changed it. On the bottom part of the page, it has the petco website link.

I just signed up for the Pet Pals thing. I read through the thread but I'm confused...if I just show up with the printed version of the 50% off coupon should they accept it, or is my Pet Pals account linked with the discount?

Yeah about that they don't really if it linked to your PAL account. But I done it before where I got a 15% coupon code. I used it and then pass it off to a friend and he was able to use to it. So not 100% sure if it is actually linked to your PAL account. BUT LET HOPE NOT......

What was the subject title of the email you received? I received a Petco email today about "Mega September Savings" but nothing about a mystery coupon.

Just asked in MI also and they didn't know about it, I was asking about fish though and they said if the coupon says percent off your total order, it will count toward EVERYTHING ... all animals included.

I can't believe no one else (including myself) has gotten this e-mail notification. I get tons of PetCo e-mails, but nothing about this promotion

Same here. $45/bag is EXPENSIVE.

I thought Petco sells it like $50 plus when it is not on sales. Even on sales it's like $48.

Yeah I haven't gotten the email either. Maybe it's only for a specific location?

Just checked my email and do not have a Mystery Coupon email. Had an email from Petco that was sent this morning at about 5:40am promoting a Mega Savings Event......20%-40% off sitewide.

anyone care to recommend a brand for flea and tick prevention drops for a kitten. Frontline and advantix are crazy expensive to the other brands. Are they worth it for an indoor kitten?

I think Costco sells Frontline for dog...not sure for cat.

Just got an e-mail from Petco with mystery savings at B&M stores on Saturday, September 15th 2012. The savings levels are 10%, 15%, 25%, 50% off your ENTIRE purchase.

It's clear from the URL of the e-mail that different URL's correspond to different savings levels. Please post here if you used one of the coupons and we'll confirm that the savings levels are correct. We can't be certain of the savings levels until the coupons are actually used! Thanks to velocityhead for figuring out the percentage levels!

10% off [petco.com]

15% off [petco.com]

25% off [petco.com]

50% off [petco.com]

This discount is only good on SATURDAY 9/15 and you need a Pals card!

I wonder how long it will take corporate to figure out that everyone is redeeming the 50% off "mystery" discount, and reprogram the registers so that the 50 rings in at 15%? Worth a try, but Petco is normally about 15-20% higher than PetSmart on most items to begin with... BTW, PetSmart has a 15% off entire purchase this weekend, too. Printable from their webpage with Perks membership.

That's what I do. I buy the one with the highest weight class. Then drop it accordingly to the pound. My kitten is about 5 months, I give him 2 drop.

My local stores rarely have a clue until I bring out the coupon and even then its simply scan it and give me the total. Even if the e-mail or website talks it up like everyone and their brother will know its going on...

...and our stores have wonderful avian employees. Yes its not the best situation for the birds, but many don't go on to much better homes even after being bought as not all bird owners truly give them enough attention and cage-free time. I'd love to have the cash to pick up a bird for DH, since mom took back the African grey again....We could even keep this one from swearing...LMAO
