Is this any good? as opposed to getting a cheap 4.1 or 5.1 speaker setup in the $100-150 range?

Should put Open Box in title. This is sold as both Refurb and Open Box. Meaning it was sold as a refurb at discount, returned AGAIN, and then tested by Newegg (not Vizio) for basic functionality only. You might get lucky, but very good chance you will get a defective item and would have to pay return shipping if you want to return it.

newegg will make you pay for the shipping back and maybe restocking fee if it's not defective.

does it have optical input?

Its a step up from TV onboard speakers, equivalent to a set of PC speakers in the $30 - $40 range.

I picked one up for a bedroom TV several months ago, its underwhelming, except for its size.

Lots of good jokes made about these, like they will remain on sale until every household in the world has one. They are on sale every 2-3 weeks, open box or refurb, I expect most of them are returns due to buyer's remorse.

Been passing up on all the other deals but I can take a chance for only $38. No tax or stupid $10 rebates and free shipping.
Perhaps it was returned because of the remote control sensor which is an easy fix.

Well, they are at least up front about it if you add it to cart, they state it could also be missing accessories like the power adapter and remote control even though they are necessary to use the product.

Sure you have to pay shipping back if you changed your mind, but for the heavy item like this most store do that.
You got 30days free return to newegg and 90 days warranty from Vizio if "Defected", Fair enough to me.

I've actually heard pretty good things about Vizio's soundbars (in contrast to other similarly-priced brands, which I've generally heard negative comments about).. at least in terms of sound-quality.

At $38, it really can't get too much cheaper unless you get really really lucky.

As for what to use this for - a bedroom or living room speaker for a TV, but don't expect great bass from any speaker of this size. If you don't care a ton about sound but want good bass for movies or music, go for a set that includes a wireless sub.. just make sure it's still decent. This is definitely a good option though for something on the cheap.
