Nice price but the fact that these fans barely move any air at all is a killer for me

They are sleeve, but that is not necessarily a bad thing if good materials are used and proper seal. I've had good quality sleeves last a few years b4 retiring in still working condition, but you don't want to mount them horizontal, especially with airflow going up...that will cut the life of most sleeve fans in half at the least.

Sorry, this is a bit off-topic, but if I want to use one of these for a purpose other than a computer (let's say as an exhaust fan for a litter box), what's the part called that makes it run? I've got it hooked up to an external power supply with a molex connector, but it only works after I plug the molex into a port on a power-supply tester (like this one: http://www.gizfever.com/images/Po...ester1.jpg).

What's in the power supply tester that allows this to run? A fan controller? Whatever it is, what's the cheapest part I can use to make the fan work?

you need a mobo signal to tell the PSU to turn on.

pretty sure a soldering iron should fix it - these run full out hen connected to the 12V on a molex.

yeah most fans not moving a whole lotta air should be quiet, but nice price

Just take an old computer power supply, jumper it on with a paper clip (http://aphnetworks.com/lounge/tur...clip_trick), wire up the fans in the enclosure you want and your done. I actually did what you are describing a few years back, had a covered litter box that exhausted outside, 2x120mm fans, low quite air flow, used the expandable dryer vent hose to exhaust out. It really kept any odors down and actually worked pretty well, then we moved, I should set up something like that again...

Using a 300+W PSU for these is extreme overkill. I have several powered by ac/dc power converters from old portable radios/cd players/etc for cooling external drives and a/v rack. Any 12v or 9v output will power fans. Select red/orange wire for speed of fan and black for ground.

I think this is a dead deal / price mistake.

I was charged no sales tax and I have a staples down the street. This is obviously an error as I normally get charged tax. Still in for 5, but we'll see what happens.
