What is your take on private MMORPG servers?

why do you feel entitled to additional content for free? your subscription allows you to use the software to access the content you paid for on their servers.

case for blizzard wow servers - people bought WoW, which is useless without Blizzard's WoW servers - blizzard has a monopoly over WoW servers, do they not? they can charge whatever they want for access to those servers? it may not be directly violating a law, but it's more of a moral issue than a personal belief - lets suppose a person buys WoW, and then the next day Blizzard goes under, rendering their purchase 100% useless - or perhaps just hacked for a while like PSN was - see the problem? if something goes wrong, your purchase is 100% useless since you don't have any alternatives, and it's not like stores are very eager to accept returns on video games, especially ones that all you really do is plug a code in and throw away the box + cd + manual/etc. for

and yes, valve is wrong for having games only accessible through steam and requiring steam-works to run, and actually they are having issues because of that over in Europe

I think it is bullshit how much the Coca Cola corporation charges for Coke, wtf, they have a monopoly on Coke, it isn't fair. They should lease the formula for Coke to anyone who wants it and let the market decide what it is worth. If they go out of business, I may never get to drink my Coke again, it isn't fair!

Now do you see how dumb your argument is? I don't think you understand what monopoly actually means. It references an entire industry or type of product. Blizzard owns the rights to WoW and can pretty much do whatever the hell they want. They don't have a monopoly over MMOs or video games. Now if Coca Cola had a monopoly, they would control the entire cola/soda market, not just THEIR OWN PRODUCT.

Not to mention, everything in your argument is clearly explained before you purchase that product, and you have a choice . . . to NOT purchase it. They work on supply and demand, so long as there is demand for their product, they will continue to supply it at a price the market will bear. You can complain all you want, but I am not sure what moral basis you have for it other than "I don't think it is fair." Which is just plain silly, cause life isn't fair, you don't get everything you want, and your sense of entitlement is laughable.

if coke goes out of business, your $200 stash of coke won't magically turn useless, not to mention that others can make similar products - who else can (legally) make a server for WoW use?

If WoW goes out of business, you stop paying your monthly subscription, and you go play something else in that genre, Blizzard doesn't have a monopoly on MMOs! I guess you just don't understand the concept of licensing/monopoly/competing products/ownership, and no amount of further explanation is going to help.

ya and if they legally pursued people putting up private servers after the company shuts down the official ones, I think that constitutes IRL trolling. The only way to play phantasy star online anymore is through private servers because Sega cut support. Same with a bunch of other games, like Hellgate London and Starwars Galaxies.

just because its not available anymore does not mean its legal to steal other's intellectual property

again i bring up the license terms you agree with before purchasing.

Just like with Steam's new license agreement, if you disagreed with them, they will immediately deactivate your steam account

and yes that meant you would not be able to access your games.
