What's so good about Whole Foods Market?

With WF's, I go there specifically for specialty items that I can't get elsewhere.

Come on now. It doesn't apply to everything at Whole Foods! For example, I can't get semolina flour or Arctic Zero ice cream anywhere else except online where shipping truly kills the deal. Also, the grocery stores near my house don't sell ground veal which I need for some of my Italian pasta dishes. And, have you tried some of the pies from Whole Foods in their bakery section? They usually have two types--high priced one and a lower priced pie without a crumbly top. The cheaper one is about $7 and actually very good.

I do think that most of their produce is overpriced though. However, they have a good selection of organic mushrooms that are sold by weight that actually comes out cheap if you just need a few ounces of X mushrooms. Also, their cheese selection is AWESOME! Expensive but totally worth it for the rarer cheeses.

And, as I've said, their generic brand (I think it's called 365 brand) is competitively priced and good quality. My wife loves their 365 brand oatmeal which is the same price as Quaker Oats but tastes better. Also, I like their pickles.

Beware the hot food section though! Sold by weight, it can get very expensive if you start just scooping the food into their containers and not paying attention. Most of the hot food isn't very good.....just okay.

I just found out about the Artic Zero ice cream. My local Kroger store carries it.

I paid a dollar per half gallon at Kroger 2 weeks ago, but this sale could be better in some areas of the country.

Have you tried it yet? It's okay. Obviously, not like real ice cream but not bad. I think the best flavors are the Chocolate Mint and Chocolate Peanut Butter. Vanilla Maple and Cookies N Cream aren't very good.

I've only tried the cookies N cream so far. I'm hoping the other flavors are better. But for 150 calories a pint, it's not too bad.

especially if you believe in the fairy tale that is "organic" (and the major selling point enabling them to charge much more for it).

We have a WF opening in a handful of months. I have never been in one, but I hope they have vanilla beans so I can infuse some rum and vodka for vanilla-y goodness.
