I don't think the soundbar can power the center channel, you would need a receiver. The speaker is rather large, so take that into consideration.

I have this set of speakers that I bought from the BB sale recently. It is by far the best $170 I've ever spent on a 5.0 system, or possibly for any system under $500 for that matter. Check out the thread about it on AVSforums. Pair it with a Denon 1612 for optimum price/performance.

pretty sure the point of a soundbar is to eliminate need for other speakers.

All of these speakers are rather large and atypically shaped for speakers in this price range. Best Buy had these in the listening room forever.....they may still if you have a BB near you so you can check them out. Personally, I love the look -- but these are all massive compared to the average set of compact speakers out there these days. This is NOT a system for you if you're looking for "heard but not seen".

Also, be aware that these speakers require a bit more juice to power -- you're going to have to turn up the volume a bit.

All that said, my opinion, and those of quite a few people on A/V Forums around the Internet, is that these are the absolute best sounding speakers in this price range. Personally, I couldn't find a 5.0 set within a range up to triple the cost of these that I would like more. I use this set at home and I love them. They sound terrific. Can you get better speakers? Of course you can. For $220? absolutely not.

For the record, the matching SW-8 sub is often on sale, and sounded much better than I expected it to when I listened to it in-store. I have a BIC F12 (not actually hooked up at the moment) that is much better though and I would not hesitate to suggest.

Again, as someone above me mentioned, make sure you have space. I have this Bell'O TV stand [amazon.com], which has a decent-sized top shelf and the center takes up a hefty chunk of the real estate on my top shelf. Maybe I could fit a Wii on the top shelf with it....but not very much more. And remember the curved design of all of the pieces -- it sounds great, but it's not like a bunch of flat-panel pieces that you're going to mount on the wall.

Again, I love these speakers and plan to run them until they die someday far from now.....but with Newegg's restocking fee (and what it would cost to ship these anyway), I wouldn't want someone to buy first and ask questions later on these. Make sure you've got a space for them. If you do, fire away....it's a great set.


Edit: And, for the record, I run these with an Onkyo TX-NR609 in case anyone is wondering what I use. I'd wait for the Columbus Day or BF sale from ShopOnkyo to buy a refurb if you're interested in an Onkyo receiver.

Edit #2: Also, for anyone who is just looking for a pair of bookshelves for a garage system or something, I'd enthusiastically recommend snagging these. For two small, cheap bookshelves, they impress me. They put out a nice sound for their size and price.

How would you think this rate compared to the onkyo s9400thx htib? Would be about the same price piecing everything together vs buying the set.

Couldn't had said it better. I upgraded from my HT-S3300 Onkyo HT in a box and I couldn't be happier. I also just ordered the matching Pioneer sub-woofer for 80 bucks at Newegg since my room is pretty small so I really didn't want to spend too much. I will upgrade it whenever I move to a bigger place.

I just ordered a a HT-RC360 to completely upgrade my system. (shoponkyo has 15% off refurbs right now)

Yeah, I am using three C21s as my front L/C/R speakers, powered by a Denon 1712 receiver. For the price I can't complain - sounds nice.

Oh yeah, I had 29 Onkyo points from past purchases and registrations/reviews. The price was attractive enough with 15% and my points.
