I want to say that the base-level Synology NASes come with dual-core Atoms, if that matters. But FreeNAS is free and supposedly pretty nifty. I think maybe it just depends on if you want a stable, supported NAS that you can set and forget, or if you want something tweaky that you can get crazy on configuration with. Then there's always the "yeah, I built that" factor which makes a homebuild a good thing. Let us know which way you go, guys.

USB 2.0! I have to pass this one although looking for a NAS for quite some time. Yah I know, some day I just want to use it directly with PC. Thats the reason.

Are these new WD Red drives actually worth the price tag?

Go to the Synology site and review the compatible drives list. To be 100% safe you should stick to that list...then if something goes haywire Synology can't say "well - that drive's not compatible".

NO. I had one in my "always on" box and ended up returning it. Fairly loud (and frequent) auto-parking clicks, to where the 3TB WDC Green drives I have (both old gen and current) you can't hear at all. Ended up with a 3TB Seagate and have been pleased.

the DS213+ has a PPC processor and CAN'T run plex. I got all excited when I saw your post because I wan't a 2-bay synology that can run plex (with transcoding). Is that too much to ask? Sigh.

Would you recommend the WD greens [newegg.com] or the Seagates [newegg.com]?

It's pretty much the same price but 7200 RPMs.

(I do dislike Seagate, though)

even high end synology servers have problem transcoding video, from what i heard the DS213+ is okay transcoding SD videos

For use in your NAS? The newer Green WDC, for sure. I'm price-alerting these for $140 myself so I can pick up a couple more. Good drives and on Synology's compatibility list.

Tempting, but I think im going to do it myself also... cheaper and holds alot more drives. I have been thinking either a 5 to 8 drive NAS or just build a 35w Core i3 based system.

I run an ATOM CPU right now with various sized drives on Windows 7 with drive bender and it works well for my needs. FreeNAS wasn't an option due to the varied drive sizes and lack of RAM (4GB) to do it properly (ZFS) Thinking about a NAS tho to save space and noise reduction. Decisions...

35w Core i3 system, 16GB DDR3, 8 x 3TB drives (if I can find a mobo with 8 sata ports) and FreeNAS ends up being cheaper upfront though it seems.
