Tea Bag= 14 cents/bag K-cup= 1 minute to brew 8 oz Tea Bag= 5 minutes to seep So how much is 4 minutes worth? If you make 10 bucks an hour.... that is .66 cents So for box of 20 tea bags, tack on 13 bucks for time spent No matter who you are, or what you do, time is money. K-cup rules. Even with this price equation, 5 boxes of these instead of 5 boxes of tea bags can justify a small Keurig purchase. So, by the time you've read this, you've got 4 more minutes for your cup of tea. I'm already drinking mine. |

If you actually would spend all 5 minutes watching the tea bag steep, you probably do work for $10 an hour. My Keurig will do hot water in under a minute; the same time to insert a kcup or drop a teabag in. . .then do something else in your life for 5 minutes. . .then enjoy a better cup of tea!!!
How much is a better cup of tea worth to you? My tea bags work with hot water anywhere. Kcups only work with Keurigs. Just sayin, not as mobile. If you like to mix 2 or three flavors to take advantage of taste, antioxidants, etc. . . .your time factor becomes even less as with the Keurig. I can drop three teabags in at once, and then do something else for 5 minutes uninterrupted; whereas you would have to pop in a kcup 3 seperate times. You have no strength/flavor controls with the kcup teas other than ounces dispensed, i.e. 6,8,10,12,14, or 16 ounces. And not all models do 12, and/or it takes 2 cycles to do 12, 14, or 16 ounces. You are right about time. I can steep for 3 or 6 minutes for strength/flavor. Unless your machine is already on, it takes 1-3 minutes to warm up; If in a real pinch, I can fill a cup with water and microwave and then drop a bag faster/more precise than I can turn on a keurig, load, and then return in "about" 90 seconds to press brew. I do like my kcup coffees. But the teas were made easier years ago with the tea bag. And iced coffee kcups, and iced tea especially, are a waste of $$$. IMO of course. And yes, I never pay more than 20 cents per coffee kcup of my choice. And I do like Keurig for that. But don't go on an economic trip about kcup tea saving you money in productivity. If you make $60+ an hour (just easy with the hour) the 3 minutes you wasted making the kcup could have been spent on a $3 cup of tea bought; or paid your secretary the time to make it for you; or been a good way for your kid to make $3 before school. Currently at home I am using HEB "premium" teas. Green, Earl Grey, English, pomegranate, etc. that IMO taste better than kcups and are more versitile. . .and I got 20 free with each bottle of apple juice purchased. With 6 kids, needless to say, I bought (and "got") alot. THis deal is only for ONE flavor; the others are $11

My solution: If you have an ekobrew for your Keurig-- just put 2 teabags in it, filters and all, and run it through your Keurig. It works marvelously and even if you use a good tea like Tetley, it ends up being about .06-.10 per cup. This precludes you have the $10 ekobrew, of course. I just buy teabags knowing it will take 2 per cup when deciding what kind to purchase. If you're feeling flush or have a friend in the UK and can get Typhoo at a reasonable price, it's the best of all worlds. (I have not as yet tried PG Tips.) Celestials herbals work just fine, too. They all come out plenty strong on the 8oz setting.
On occasion I will put in one regular black tea with say an Earl or Lady Grey bag. Or a Lemon Zinger with a black tea-- the possibilities are endless! Hope that will inspire a happy conclusion to the debate of bag vs Keurig!

Even if you have a Keurig brewer, you can just put the bag into the cup and let the Keurig provide the hot water. Sit the tea next to your desk for 4 more minutes and then drink. |
