Querying the Collective esp. Sportsguys for Birthday Gift Ideas

First time posting anywhere outside "Hot Deals", and wondered about whether to post this in the "Help Me Find a Deal" forum. I posted in "Deal Talk" at first since I didn't even have any specific ideas about what to buy yet, but I guess I still chose the wrong subforum despite my considerations before posting. Thankfully a moderator has moved this for me.

A friend's birthday is coming up, and I'd like to seek help from everyone here, especially the more sports/outdoors oriented people for some help in getting a gift.

Here are the details:

1. I'm considering more than one idea, but would really appreciate any pointers on some items related to hiking or racquetball. What are some things that someone experienced in either activity would always need or be able to use even if they already have them? Or something of a higher quality/multi-function that they would always be glad to get?

2. The recipient is a guy.

3. Due to very tight budget constraints, the most I can spend is $50. I know most sports stuff is expensive, but this is really the most I can do right now; not even spending that much on myself for none living necessities. So good thing this is a deals forum
