Alternative option instead of renting comcast digital transport adapter?
Hey, I was wondering if there are any devices like a tivo or something else that does the same thing as Comcast's digital transport adapter for tv. I have been renting one for $8 a month and would like to no longer rent it if that's possible as it adds up. thanks

What kind of tv do you have? If you're using a DTA, it seems most likely you're using an old analog standard definition tv. Is this correct?
Are you sure you're renting a DTA and not a regular set top box? IIRC, when comcast first started phasing out analog channels they were giving away DTAs (2 per household). Punch your account number in here: https://digitalnow.comcast.com/ and see what it says as this page mentions ordering equipment. If you have an HDTV, it may be able to pick up a handful of channels that are broadcast ClearQAM. To get more channels in HD quality (the DTA's output is only SD quality) on an HDTV or a device like a TiVo, you would either need an HD set top box or a Cable Card both of which have to be rented form the cable company. If you're sick of comcast's tv service entirely, you can always ditch them and get an antenna. |

htpc + cablecard tuner. but if you dont have one already, its way more cost effective to pay for a dta.

Comcast has stopped giving out two free
|

they've also stopped the 'free' part- see http://www.philly.com/philly/busi...pters.html
....sigh... it was only a matter of time. short of cancelling service completely (which many of us can't do- gotta love legalized monopolies) and going the Hulu route or settling for OTA HD, is there anything Comcast subscribers can do to avoid having to use DTAs provided by them? |

I'm pissed - not that the dollar amount is so much, but that we have no options. I am using these crappy DTA boxes on two QAM equipped HDTVs (in bedrooms). I would be happy to return Comcast's equipment to them and just connect my TV's directly to the cable, but Comcast also scrambles most digital content unless I go through the DTA, or pay 10 bucks a month each for HDTV boxes. Of course the "digital" quality is nothing like the HD quality I would get if I could just use my TV's internal QAM connection. My understanding was that the free DTA's were to compensate for the fact that analog tv's were no longer going to be usable, even though at some point it was mandated that people should be able to access cable with their own equipment. I guess they can say people should have upgraded their equipment by now, but what the hell - I have upgraded equipment and I can't get the cable signal I am paying for onto my TV without this crappy box. |
