For the sake of clarification (as someone usually asks in these battery charger threads), this is a plug-in only unit and it only has the ability to slow charge a battery or trickle charge it to maintain it in storage. This unit doesn't have the ability to jump-start a car. Sears sells a unit that has a 50 amp charging ability, as well as slow/trickle charge settings. Don't let the part of the description that indicates "50 amp clamps") trick you into thinking that it has 50 amp charging ability.

I just paid 30 for this at Sears yesterday since my Miata's battery died and I needed something that did 2A.

Crap.

Anyway, if you have a 1990-2005 Miata, you need something that only does 2A to charge it due to it being an AGM battery. Just as an FYI

yes, it will , it just takes a while.
However according to the documentation, it's not really good for your battery to do that. I've done it and it works, but it is claimed that it reduces the life of the battery. If you have nothing else and this is a one time thing, I would just do it anyways.
I have this charger and it works great. Hook up and forget.
Trick is to hook it up when the battery is close to full already and you won't need the vehicle for a longer time.

It states in the specs. that the Battery Clamps are rated to 50amps, this unit does not put out 50amps.
Decent price so I`m in one one for to use as a float charger for the 6volt battery in the antique car. Thanks Repped.

If the battery is still good, yes, it will charge it. But it will take a really long time, multiple days, not hours. I don't understand how a trickle charge (slow) could damage the battery. Maybe this is confused with fully discharging the battery? Regardless, this is not the best choice to use as a battery charger. It is a maintainer.

Chargers like this are meant to keep a battery charged over a long period of time, like when you store a vehicle over the winter or otherwise for some time. CTEK is arguably the most trusted brand, but they cost a lot more than this. However they also have features intended especially for storage modes. Auto shut-off, detection to only start charging when needed, separate charge/maintain/winter mode settings, etc. Reverse hookup protection (which this also has) is important so that the if you lose power the charger doesn't drain your battery. Though some really cheap units that advertise this feature still create a drain.

I already have a CTEK and I'm not totally sure I would trust this hooked up to my car all winter. But the price is right. I could see using it to maintain a boat battery or something like that.

Many modern cars (especially those with keyless start) have a pretty high constant drain on the battery when they are just sitting there. Enough to kill the battery in as little as two weeks in some cases. It is also hard on your battery to completely discharge it and then let it sit all winter. So if you store your car it's generally best to either disconnect the battery or use a maintainer like this.
