Best credit card for someone with no credit

I'm a recent college graduate and would like to start building credit as well as make my online purchases a safer so I've been thinking about getting a credit card. There are so many cards, and I'm not sure which would be the best option.

- Recent college grad
- No credit history
- No debt whatsoever
- Decent paying elec. engineering job (~6 weeks on the job so far)
- No rent/mortgage at the moment
- If a cashback card is even an option for someone with no credit, one that has decent CB on gas would be optimal since my daily commute is currently ~70 miles to and from work.

Any suggestions?

Best idea is to use the 'search this forum' button up on the right. This question gets asked a lot, and there is some good info out there.

I would try that first, get a better idea of what you want, then come back with more specific questions and you'll get plenty of help.

Also, do you have student or car loans? That would give you a credit history.

You could also look into becoming an authorized user of someone else's card (usually a parent/relative) to boost your score.. as long as they trust you, and you won't screw up their credit score, of course.

Then do the samething with credit union..... Let the account age for about 1 or 2 years then apply for something better with rewards and stuff........hope its help

My first card was from Washington Mutual (now Chase) and I had to put a deposit in it (secure card). I put $500 deposit and I get to spend that amount monthly. If I go over, they'd freeze the account or close it (don't remember cause it was a LOOONG time ago). After a year, I applied to other banks and got approved. This was my way of building up credit.

You weren't lucky. That's just they way it was back then. Those pre-Credit CARD Act days are over for now. Back then, credit card companies fell all over themselves to issue credit cards to college students because they were the most profitable sector in the market. Why? Because the students would run the credit card balance up sky high then, when they couldn't pay the bill, mommy and daddy would step in and pay the bill.

i never see anyone get a starting credit limit when they were college with $14000. I mean what did you make back then when you in school ? .....10k per year and they gave you 14k starting credit line.....lol.......Amex not that stupid .....
