Read the Wiki for more info. This is a SIP device plus can connect to Google Voice.
Magicjack (and magicjack Plus) is proprietary. Meaning you can't use their devices to connect to other Voip services. And you can't use other SIP device to connect to magicjack. That's the same for Nettalk and Ooma also. If something happened to Magicjack, Nettalk, Ooma, their device become useless. Or if your Magicjack, Nettalk, Ooma's device dead, you have to buy their device again. As for Magicjack plus and Ooma, the device is more expensive than Obi100/110.

I am tempted to buy this cause I have terrible reception in my new house.
The question is will google voice remain free in 2013.

Even if google voice charge money, probably not expensive. And to complete with Apple, they probably will keep this popular service for free or cheap to keep their loyal users.

Alternative to GV, here are some good quality/low cost Voips. Remember Obi is a standard SIP device so you are not tie to GV and any specific Voip service.

I was waiting for the Obi202 to be sale again ( $60 last time - http://slickdeals.net/permadeal/7...hone-ports ) but I can get by without the extra line and other features of the Obi202 for a while and my next landline billing cycle starts soon so here I go. At any rate ,this will device pay for itself fast. Now that I ordered the Ob110, the Obi202 will go on sale soon ....

Edit - As fate would have it the Obi202 showed up on sale today an hour after I ordered the Obi110 ! . cancelled my order for the Obi110 and purhase the Obi202.

Can I just use this as a stand alone device and get a phone number assigned by OBIHAI
and use it like OOMA service ?

This is a great concept...i want to implement it. Had a quick questions though - the POTS that you have connected in India - is this dedicated only to OBI or also being used by your folks in India as local india connect. the question is what happens a person calls this POTS and no one is home to pick up ...does it hit the OBI auto attendant by default or does it just ring and one hangs up realizing that no one is at home...

the general recommendation is never to connect the security system with a VOIP type of device. This is completely based on your broadband availability - if it disconnects - your security system becomes useless or (based on what system you have) will have the security guys sending the cops home every now and then.

I got a magic jack (old one) from sears for free after my online order coupon. Can i use it without compute with these connection adaptors [ebay.com] I would plan to plug magic jack directly to router using these adaptors

My magic jack still has 10 months of service and its a pain to use it with the computer all time ..
