You have that reversed, a 1:7 twist is better for heavier rounds, say 62 or 69 or 75 grain 556/223. The 1:9 is better for standard 55 gr rounds. The heavier twist means that you get a more aggressive spin for the heavier rounds which helps stabilize it.
Ah! You're right.

Not a bad deal but you once you add a BCG and charging handle, you're close to some entry level uppers that come complete.

I got a DPMS with the A3 config (fixed carrying handle) and it was around $390 complete.

Here's a DPMS flat top for about that much.

Not trying to thread crap but a decent BCG is about $100 and a handle is another $20.
Yeah, but you're kinda glossing over the fact that the DPMS is a very entry level upper with 4140 Chrome-Moly Steel that isn't chrome lined. OP's upper that you're comparing it to is manufactured of 4150 Cho-mo (what you would find in a M249 squad automatic weapon) and has a chromed-lined bore; a clear advantage in terms of longevity and barrel cleaning. That's a very high grade barrel manufactured by FN.

To say you can get the DPMS (admittedly a fine entry level upper) for about the same price after accounting for the BCG and CH doesn't really address the signficant difference in quality.

Point taken. That would definitely be a consideration for a serious shooter. I don't get out as much as I'd liked to so I'm always looking at it from a "light usage" aspect.

My blemished PSA lower was $60 and I got the Magpul STR lower build kit for $150. The STR stock alone retails for $100, and is very highly rated, so $210 for the completed lower isn't a bad deal. I will probably upgrade the trigger at a later date, but the basic mil spec lower parts are good enough and will be what you find in most complete low and mid range AR's. I'm looking at the Stag Arms completed uppers that are in the mid $500 range, but will wait a few weeks to check out the gun show when it comes to town. My build will end up probably costing $700-800 minus optics, and it should be what would be considered a mid-range quality rifle. Building it myself also makes for a more difficult paper trail for the wife, since I am piecing it out here and there! haha!

finally... this is a 400 assembly marked down to 279 bucks... the one that goes on sale for 279 is only 299 regularly

I've ordered a few Glock mags from Botach 2 or 3 times and never had a problem. Delivery was prompt too. I may have also bought DPMS .308 mags from them, but I am not 100% sure...
Just one person's experience with only one brand (or possibly 2) of product, of course...

They are hit and miss. Have gotten things quickly, and also waited 3 months for an eotech before canceling and buying elsewhere... just depends

if you are going to buy an optic on a budget build, get the PSA $999 deal. Hard to beat. Parts are better than budget grade $600 builds people have mentioned above.

I have had maybe 20 orders through them, they are generally get stuff to you fast. I've also had in stock items take 6 months to get to me. 2 orders have required charge backs since they would answer phone calls or emails. I've had chat operators lie to me.

Pricing is good. Service varies between good and sketchy. When you don't need it urgently, there is a good chance that you will get it, but if you want it in a timely fashion pay someone else.

2 tips: 1) No tax in California, they eat the 8.25%. 2) Buy each item separately since shipping is free and there is no minimum order required the part that bothers mean and forces me to buy individual items that way is that a single OOS item will block large orders (e.g. a bore brush of .69 cents, will stop a 30 item order for 600 dollars because they won't split the order).

This is the "machine gun steel" version produced by FN. The non blemished for 279 is not. YouTube search for AR uppers blowing up, i.e. when removed from water then quickly fired. I know it seems ridiculous, but even I fall victim to the preference of getting the one with better metal notwithstanding the likelihood that I am going to go play Navy Seal.

Just now checking my SD.. sorry for the delay. The one with the "machine gun steel" would be my preference. Although, I own a couple dozen different and think they are all reasonable in quality. Again, as much fun as it might be, I won't be playing Navy Seal Smilie.
