since hotels are easy to get cheap is it not better to go for airline cards.. i rather a $800-$1000 worth of plane ticket from the united card then a few nights in a hotel which i can book through hotwire or price line for $200-$300

For Las Vegas fans, you can probably use this for the Cosmopolitan, the trendiest hotel in Vegas. It is affiliated with Marriott.

I wanna apply for this and close it after one year to avoid annual fee, but does that kill my credit score significantly?

How does closing an account impact your credit score? In this scenario, the cards is the youngest card I have on file, but I dont like that card.

As a few others have mentioned, this is not a good deal. This is a standard offer and Marriott points aren't as valuable as others, like Ultimate Rewards. I'd recommend applying for those cards instead. Poke around flyertalk.com for recommendations on better cards and commentary on this deal.

Just applied pretty late (a couple of weeks ago) - which was way past the promotion. When I received the card (last week), I called to activate it and the CSR wanted to ask me some routine questions (like how I heard about the promo). I mentioned that I was considering the card for a while when they had the 70k promotion and was late in applying. I then asked him if I could get the additional 20k - he put me on hold and went to talk to a manager. When he got back he said that he'll file an appeal on my behalf - A few days ago, I was pleasantly surprised to received a letter saying that they've credited me with 20k.
So looks like its still unofficially working! Thanks guys! |
