The "thing" with cat poop is concern that a pregnant woman could contract Toxoplasmosis [wikipedia.org] from contact with it, or inhaling / eating particles that have come off of it. (Dust in the litter box, etc.) I suppose then you could jump to a pregnant woman working in a sewage treatment plant, or maybe that the sewage is released into waterways that a pregnant woman might swim in. That's related to one of the top reasons cats end up at the pound / abandoned / get euthanized, women getting pregnant and thinking that having the cat around threatens their baby. Since the cat poop is only infectious for a couple of weeks, maybe a month or two, after the cat first contracts the disease (by eating an infected rodent), chances are small that it'll even be an issue. Just having someone else take care of the cat or at least take care of the litter box for a couple of months pretty much addresses the issue. Early diaper training for dad ![]() I'd think, if anything, the hair content of cat poop might be more of a problem. I suppose it could clog more easily, maybe require a plumber? Other than that, it's just a non-issue, like cell phones on planes, where people focus on something creepy rather than something likely to be a real problem. It's almost as hard to be "understanding" of the pregnant woman abandoning her cat as it is someone who "can't" take their pet to the new home, because the landlord won't allow it. (It's like, well, why are you moving there then? Plenty of places will. Sigh.) Just wash your hands before eating and after using the restroom is good protection from it, and many other baddies. |

Very true....my wife contracted it after getting wasted and thinking the litter box was the pantry. Mentioned something about being hungry for tootsie rolls..........

Thanks, bought 3 (not all for me). Go to http://www.littergenie.com/offer and click yes, you already have a Litter Genie then click share with friends for $5 off refills. They were $7.99 at my Target in Parma, OH. The coupon pops up instantly and I think you can use fake email addresses or even just use yours 3 times. I have 3 but I did do this twice with the same set with no problems. I took in 3 strays along with my 2 so until they get homes I welcome this device - had a diaper genie and liked it.

For the cat box, I picked up a Clever Cat top entry cat box. Our new kitten is both VERY fastidious and a SERIOUS digger, so I was having to sweep the floor multiple times a day. It was a total PITA to say the least. She took straight to the Clever Cat and it's impossible for her to fling litter out of the cat box now. I love it! On top of that, the closed design really holds down the smell until I scoop. For litter, I'm using the new Arm & Hammer Natural litter. It's a lightweight non-clay litter that is phenomenal for keeping the odor under control, and it clumps great! As a very lightweight litter, this stuff CAN be easy for a cat to fling out of the cat box, but with the Clever Cat I don't have a single issue with that at all. It's a winning combination, and I highly recommend it! Finally, I use the Litter Genie 2 to scoop the waste into and totally eliminate the cat box smell in the house. I've had cats before and always either flushed the waste, which can cause toilet clogs, plus you either have to keep the litter box in the bathroom next to the toilet, or you have to carry it the scoop all the way to the toilet. In my opinion, both of those options are horrible, and I'm done with trying both. I've also just scooped the litter into saved plastic grocery bags from shopping. The bonus is that the bags are free, and they do seem to multiply around the house. The bad part is that they are horrible for the environment if that bothers you, and smell of the kitty waste seeps out of the bags no matter how tight you tie them, and that should bother everyone! I was sick and tired of my kitchen garbage can smelling like the cat box after a few days, or my outside garbage can smelling the same way, plus all the wasted time and effort schlepping outside to drop the little bags into the can of stank outside. Now add in bad weather, sweltering heat, or freezing cold, and trust me all I want to do is haul out one big bag of kitty waste once every couple of weeks when it's convenient for me. Yes, the replacement bags rolls can be a little expensive, you can use Diaper Genie bags in the Litter Genie if you want and those cartridges are usually cheaper. They're a 5 MIL bag compared to a 7 MIL bag, but they don't seem to allow the odor to escape all that much sooner than the official Litter Genie bags. If you have a lot of cats, then it won't matter at all as you'll fill the bags way faster than the odor can leech through the bag. If you only have one cat, you'll be changing them a little soon than you would with the heavier bags, but you can always just make smaller bags. So yes, I spend a little extra money on the bag cartridges, but they save me time (which is worth more money than the darned bags), and they keep my house from smelling like a giant litter box (which is worth WAY more money than the darned bags). Sometimes it's worth spending a little extra money for ease of use and peace of mind, and in my opinion this is one of them. Wineaux

I recently learned that the top entry litter boxes are REALLY bad on a cat's joints [catinfo.org]. Think about when you walk on sand - with these boxes, they have to jump off of that and at a weird angle too. A cheaper and better solution is to get a regular storage tote and cut an opening on the long side, almost all cats will walk in through the opening, turn to the side and do their business and scoop towards the high side rather than the opening.
