would this be worth getting as a backup isp?
just came back from two days without fios service because my line was knocked down and I'm wondering if this would be a good emergency backup if paired with an ipod touch to check email and get the news.
also wondering if it's safe to order with all these stolen credit card stories?

In my opinion, yes it makes a good backup to your regular method of access. Never leave it connected when you aren't using it and turn off all the background stuff. Leave software updates for your regular way of connection. Be very careful with watching video or anything that streams. Always remember that your usage meter on the freedompop website will usually take a few hours to reflect correctly what you've used. You will definitely want to take advantage of getting an additional 500mb to use every month by following the freedom friends link here on SD. The person who set that up here is a genius in my opinion. Used a credit to order the Photon hotspot and I couldn't be happier. No issues with mis-use of the credit card.

I never bashed it. I just said I wished it could work for me.

Even so, I also said I was still considering it as an emergency access point when I have no other alternatives.

Does this company provide unlimited data plans? Or would I just be looking at a ClearWire service for that?
Besides it's usual portability, emergency use was my thought as well. I have tmobile at home and no data plan with that, and since this uses Sprint's network I would have a backup network in case of emergency.

Guess what? On Oct 29 Hurricane Sandy hit us in NJ, power out at 4PM Monday. Phones went dead 5 hrs later, and tmobile NOR the FreedomPop hotspot device could get a cell signal to work. That's because the storm took down some cell towers in some way, so I'm told. So even with a Verizon Fios landline, a tmobile cell, and this Sprint device, I could not make any calls. I even travelled 10 miles away from my home on two different days and could not get a signal.

I decided to return my device. I don't want to deal with the Terms of Service changing every day plus I got tethering on my iPhone and the inactivity fees for Freedompop are not worth the hassle to me.

After the hurricane I couldn't use my Verizon phones lol. We were out of power for the whole week. I think every cellular network was taken down after it. I was having trouble making calls and sending texts for over a week around my area. I know Verizon had generators on some of their towers so the service was spotty, but T-Mobile had nothing. They were completely down, same for Sprint. Sandy ripped us a new one.

i'm in the NYC suburbs and just tried this tethered to my laptop last night. absolutely horrible surfing experience in terms of speeds and actual connectivity.

- ping drops to external dns -- 1 every 5 seconds or so
- speedtest.net wouldn't load completely and kept erroring out
- tried the sd homepage and it was still 'loading' images after 5 minutes

will test when i'm at work later this week but i'm not keeping my hopes up.

Looks like if you live in hurricane, storm, earthquake, area, you better keep some kind of traditional phone. Digital phone and cellular network and also internet likely down for a while.

It just goes to the page where you are given two featured offers to upgrade - 4GB for $29 and 2GB for $18.

Did anyone try clicking on Upgrade to 2GB? I am afraid as there might be no "Review and Confirm" step - but directly upgrades my plan...
